I admit, Paul, that that statement may have been a little harsh but having watched over the years and learned a little of the culture both from the people themselves and from those that have experienced it. I have come to believe that most So Called Australians take the freedom of choice and movement, as it were, in this country for granted and we are now becoming as restrictive and over regulated as many Euro Countries are. Perhaps it is the warm cocooned feeling Humans get when they are packed in close quarters. Personally I prefer the Wide Open Spaces as opposed to the Close Confines of City Life, packed Shopping Malls and Shopping Centers etc. raise my BP and I become very aggravated. Venues that are packed with Sweaty Bodies and Screaming really gets me into a Bad Mood. I just won't go there. Give me a lake where there are a few fellow Anglers within Ear shot and that fits like a silk glove.

That is why I tend to Plead with members of the Land Yachting Fraternity not to let it become restrictive.

It is a funny thing but something said in a Thread a few months back set my teeth on edge and made me think of that person as one that would Win At Any Cost.. Where as if I had had the part/s at hand I would have lent them to that person to make him able to compete.. No I am not Maori but I like their mentality of fair play, ****! The White Fullas have run out of Ammo! Stop the War and we will give you some so that the war can go on... Waitangi (I think).. or perhaps Honi Heki and the Flag Pole. I love their thinking. It may not have done them immediate good but you gotta respect them for it..

Ron, people can / and will build land yachts any size, any shape, any configuration and with any type of sail and rig..... they have done for years and will be doing it still for eternity there's no stopping that.
In other words there are NO RULES or REGULATIONS....

The problem occurs when yachts / people wish to race against each other and this is where design rules come into play, you need a way to "group" similar yachts together.
The Class5 uses quite strict material and dimensional restrictions....
Promo Class5 uses a slight difference of rules to enable newcomers into the area of the sport.
The FISLY Mini 5.6 rule was created by many countries of land sailors sailing many hundreds of small land yachts wanting a way to "group" similar yachts together, and not surprising that while it may not suit EVERYBODY it seems to suit probably 90% of the worldwide small yacht sailing community.

Class restrictions DO NOT restrict people that want to build yachts and DO NOT want to race (in formal club and championship events) .....

Well.....why not a yardstick classification, as in yachting, where many brands

and shapes and sizes, all compete on a variable handicap system...used world

wide ! It tends to stop the bitching/rot and annom phone calls .

I think everyone who wants to race are more that happy to follow the FISLY standards for class(racing events) that is the only way it can be controlled.

A bit of an explanation on how this topic came up.
Way before the mini yacht rules came into place, there was a small group of us started experimenting with these small yachts, as long as it fitted into a defined wheel base anything went and it became great fun. Then rules where accepted by FISLY (and we readily supported them). only problem some of our yachts had progressed past the adopted rules. As we where having so much fun doing this we as a group did not want to stop. I accept the argument that it may need to split into A/B or whatever at some time if these yachts prove to be a distinct advantage (that has not happened as yet)
At this time the main event for mini's is held at Lefroy, our other racing venue's are class5 (Rockingham) blokart (Rockingham and Perth)
Cheers

guess I am.. I knew the meaning when it was the other way about. I just reversed it is all. Other than that I didn't question it, not that It would make any difference. In those days I had a Goatee and Mustache.

landyacht said....I would lose those shock cord batten adjusters , maybe slightly stiffer battens, carbon mast but not too stiff up top.
If the surface was rough , like Lefroy last year, I suspect some 8" back wheels and a 6"front would be a great combination

interesting comments. I was thinking change the wheel size, doesn't matter it doesn't fit. Your comment on battens are interesting, I'm not sure the "batten adjusters" really help that much. The early ones seem to unwind over time, so you have to check them frequently.

The stiffer batten is an interesting comment as most people tend to soften the battens somewhat. Why have stiffer ones?

the blokart sails I have sailed have had fuller sails, which is great for downwind but tends to make the sails poor upwind pointers. a bit stiffer with a good tensioner will help with that,BUT the payoff is that it will not accelerate as well downwind. which isnt great on a very short course,eg yeppoon nationals.
back to that horses for courses thing again
