There is always a chance it may power up at the beach. Bit when wet and soggy less chance. Mine never has. But trust me a decent size wave hitting your kite front on when still attached can not only drag you dangerously underneath the water for a fair way bit will either rip a new asshole in your kite or stretch the canopy and farq it.

In fact I'm not sure leashes has any place I. The surf at all to be quite honest.

Yeah I know the feeling. And it was only 3 foot when my kite went for a swim. A wave caught it and I shot straight to the bottom. I think I would have been in a lot of trouble if I wasn't so comfortable being underwater and without any air Suppose that's what surfing and lifeguarding gives you...

Yeah zarb same. Been held down in 12 foot surf at Margaret's plenty of times (when i was a wee bit ypunger though, l) you gotta stay calm hey. The only panic if feel is realising how messed up my kite will probably be when I surface!!

sounds like a long time since you've self rescued or surfed "offshore" reef breaks!

Yeh as I wrote that I thought exactly that, if offshore I reckon I'd have one for sure.

I'm curious about this one as well. Once you have detached from the kite and it (hopefully) washes up on the beach, what are the chances of it washing up in a position where it may power up on it's own and fly off?

Very slim. Provided the bar and lines do not catch on anyone or anything on the way to the shore.
