At lunch today some of my work mates and I went to our local Thai restaurant. I looked at my barbeque pork for a moment, pulled out a small kite shaped piece of onion, showed my mate Dan (aka DRW in this forum) and said "looks like a high aspect on this one, bet it's hard to relaunch".

It is first important to note that a kitesurfing addiction is very different from a drug addiction due to the lack of a physical intoxicant or drug.
By using Pathological Gambling as a model, kitesurfing can be defined as an impulse-control disorder which does not involve an intoxicant.

1.Do you feel preoccupied with kitesurfing (think about previous kitesurfing or anticipate your next session on the water)?

2.Do you feel the need to use kitesurfing with increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction?

3.Have you repeatedly made unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back, or stop kitesurfing?

4.Do you feel restless, moody, depressed, or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop kitesurfing?

5.Do you stay on the water longer than originally intended?

6.Have you jeopardized or risked the loss of significant relationship, job, educational or career opportunity because of kitesurfing?

7.Have you lied to family members, therapist, or others to conceal the extent of involvement with kitesurfing?

8.Do you use kitesurfing as a way of escaping from problems or of relieving a dysphoric mood (e.g., feelings of helplessness, guilt, anxiety, depression)?

Patients are considered "addicted" when answering "yes" to five (or more) of the questions and when their behavior could not be better accounted for by a Manic Episode. The cut off score of "five" is consistent with the number of criteria used for Pathological Gambling and was seen as an adequate number of criteria to differentiate normal from pathological addictive kitesurfing.

You spent a $100 on going to the big day out and now you're thinking you'll skip out of it by 1pm to catch the forecasted killer sea breeze!
You choose not to drink at the Big Day Out as it will reduce your chances of getting to work early so that you can bail work by 4pm for the breeze on Monday afternoon AND if you do drink you can't drive to the beach the evening of the Big Day Out anyway.
You now start thinking about ditching the big day out all together...
