Nobilie 50/50 with small fins is the best board ive ridden in the surf so far, the extra length and flex eats big waves and chop and the reduced spray means you dont constantly get water in your eyes .Ive ridden a lot of twin tips in the surf as it is my preferred stlye and there are lots of boards out there i like sutch as ( fone SK8 ,NHP,XRIDE,FREE RIDE,TRAX,JIMMY LEWIS) but the 50/50 fits me to a tee, huge load, soft landings ,great upwind ,good down the face of a wave and dosnt nose in even at the bottom of a barrel. And yes ive ridden lots of mutants too but depends what feeling you want out of your board
Hope this helps

Yes it does help a lot. Yes I'm starting to think I'm going to buck the WA trend and indeed stay with the TT. Will try and demo a nobil. 50/50 hey, I assume that means 150 by 50? Excuse my ignorance, too lazy to look it up right away. 50 wide, wow now that is wide.

This thread has really got me thinking, 4 pages long, there is something in this!

You board designers out there, build a complete TT wave riding machine! People will argue already done right.

Anyone ridden the Flysurfer, 'flywave'? Not many in Australia - more european thing at the moment. This is a TT built specifically for waves, some posts on the other forum but I get the feeling they have been written by you know who...

okay chaps, been riding a surfboard strapped and unstrapped this summer and to be quite honest i keep gravitating back to my old lithium twintip.

So the question is from your own riding experience what is the best twintip you have ridden in small to medium surf (won't say large because surfboard is a must here).

yes surfing tt's, do they exist???

get better!

Wave board.

That's what I ride. It allows you to charge and do tricks in the waves a surfboard can't

ask Tony Hawk... "why would you ride a double kick on a ramp??????" those styling old 'fishtails' were the bomb-shizzle-**!!! right!??!?

more to the question.... when is a surfboard designer going to come up with a working model of a twintip (for freesurfing).

it is impossible to imagine what the next prodigy is going to achieve when he can perform not just 360' spins... but 180', or... whoah... 540'!!!... and ride away without needing to straighten, on natural stance or opposite... or in fact... preferred 'stance' starts to become something only the 'old codgers' stick to. four years later every grom along the Gold Coast is popping them until one gets bored and does something further out there (to where my imagination cannot reach).

problems with the mako:

availability and delay on ordering.
expensive
no demo (where I live anyway)

Also what about the underground freewave??

And the north Freestylefish?

Underground Freewave is now called the Kipuna, but its not a twinny or even close to a Mutant, its a full on surfboard with low volume and a bit more flex, great boards, the latest version has rails just like the Underground Kipuna surfboards, best version yet for sure.

True that, never thought about it that way. I think I've pissed off Harry! He He
There is no doubt that SB's restrict freedom. Unless you are in 6 foot Gnarloo or Margs just don't see the point in perth.

Dear me I've pissed someone off! I agree for all SB riders this thread is probably becoming a little annoying. But the enormous interest and the fact that it has become a fantastic resource for which to begin your board choice, says there is something here.

I rode directionals for 4 years, TT's for 5, I can use both well enough. I honestly keep going back to the TT, unless the surf is worth it. I just see a lot of guys looking very awkward in the onshore slop we get...yet you go out to say South Passage when it's smoking and it's an absolute pleasure to watch SB riders rip it up. Also some of the movies by Ben Wilson in big surf is just awe inspiring.

There is a huuuuuge market for a TT that surfs or a SB that works like a TT - Huge, just look at this thread.

Sigh.. eppo - you'll never be part of the in crowd unless you ride what everyone else is riding. lol.

Thoughts above on TTs in mushy surf have been exactly what i have been thinking for ages.

Was very tempted to get a SB but lack of funds and a love of TT freedom in the mush (plus a feeling that SBs are restictive - unless GREAT waves demand one) have kept me on the twinnies.

Rediscovering how good my 151 is and throwing off the 'must not ride anything bigger than 140cm' mentality has been liberating.

Think outside the box and find what works for you. If it's a SB - great. If it's a twinny - tops too.

If I traveled to better waves than metro mush, I might be tempted to get a SB, but I don't and am not.

Love ma twinnies!

I think if there was a huge market, the Airush Hammer would have sold more, as it was a full on attempt to make a pure wave TT.
At 1:37 in this clip he has been towed into a wave and is surfing the wave on a wakeboard, which shows that on a powerful wave, once you get on it you can surf with a TT.
My guess is that there will always be a smallish market for a wave TT, but it will be kept small by more versatile boards with a lot of rocker like a Shinn Monk.

That's all fine but the topic is "Best Twin-tip in the surf?? Honestly...".

If the best TT is a freestyle board then that's fine. The marketing needs to tell us that and tell us why it works.

I have ridden a freestyle board in the past and it was slow and not very good upwind. I have had better luck with freeride boards and my surfboards. My newer kites are a bit more grunty than those from 5 years ago so maybe it's time to revisit freestyle boards.

I still want a surf oriented TT that has very good upwind performance. In the surf I spend a fair amount of time jamming upwind to recover lost ground after bashing a few peaks and ramps. My main wave-oriented riding involves a 5km upwind leg followed by hitting all the waves along the way back so upwind performance is important for me.

Er.. I missed the upwind request.

I couldn't honestly say that upwind is a strength of the Proof boards.

The trade off is the nice rounded rails which cushions the chop and makes wave (mush) face carves smoove.. I almost exclusively do downwinders so not a prob for my usage.

Good luck on your search

Good luck trying to find a proof for sale you mean! Jason reckons the drops were the best TT he's surfed on, and they are the prototype to the Proofs aren't they?

Hey Eppo, at the end of the day mate it's not what you ride it's how you ride it

In relation to the Mako boards we are distributors for the Ocean Rodeo gear and brought some of these boards in, they are great boards for riding super fast and slamming into a big powered turn but wave riding I just can't see it working, they don't go from rail to rail nicely, it's almost like a freaking water ski.

I havent tried the new Mako king maybe that is better ? but the 140 and 150cm forget it.

The new cardboard wave is a pretty sweet looking board.
