Shinn wave board. Been riding one for about a year now. I won't go back to a conventional TT on flat water and it is loads of fun in the surf if you like powered turns on waves.

okay, I have been interested in this board, but my experience of mutants has turned me off. Does it ride the other way well! Please not kind of well, how well honestly. I don't want to have to ride toe-side all the time. I only ride toe in the actual surf but like to ride goofy on way in to maximise upwind ground and also for rotational tricks coming in.?? Be honest, which way do you predominantly ride. Surely the back fins dig in on the way back.

+1 on the Mako. The 150 is sooooo smooth in the surf. Loved it when I had one (not long enough, boo hoo!)

Had some great sessions in the WA slop on my, well Gills Slingshot SX137. Again a lovely smooth ride. Very unfreestyle feel, lovely smooth carves and plenty of grip for hacks and huge bottom turns. Not a current model but worth a look if one pops up in the used market.

SX 137 doing its thing.

Due what happened to your mako? Which one did you prefer?

Definately the Mako, so smooth in the chop and goes upwind with ease. Have never seen another in WA so they don't get much exposure here.
The footpads would be the most comfortable I've ridden on.

The Hammer are a good board but a little prone to breaking with the wrong rider.

Hey smoothness in chop is good as my 9 year old kiter ankles and kness are feeling the pinch after 6 days straight, 2-3 hour sessions. Yeh no exposure in WA weird hey? How did you get to ride it? Know anyone with one.

Is the hammer in the same league??

I have the 138 hammer, its really nice, i think its a little short for me. I tend to nose dive it more than other boards. Smooth in the chop. A great downwinder board :) I've had it for over a year and had no issues.

Hi Eppo, I ordered mine from guys in Vic who are the only Oz distributors I think. I have the 140 and bought it 2nd hand. I wasn't able to demo one but after reading so many good reviews I decided to take a punt.

It's not a flat water board but it's perfect for the Perth chop. Drop me a line and you're more than welcome to take it for a spin one day, down at Contacios whenever the wind is up.

Just about every day at the mo.

Been talking to your mate Slack as well. He reckons the mako is a strange board to ride - ha ha, sure you guys have a lot to talk about. Ha Ha...

I really only kite in the ocean, leave the estuary to crabs, kooks and the occasional easterly.

What's the pros and cons of this board compared to others you have used. especially the hammer! HA HA.

Will take you up on the ride the offer, cheers man.
Shame they don't have a bigger presence in WA, haven't read a bad review yet! People rave about them.

Each to their own, Slack likes the Hammer but they are power hungry and I'll rocket upwind of him any day, ha, ha. I"ll discuss merits with him later at the beach.

The Mako are are different board to ride at first, they feel really loose but at the same time they are so smooth. I still have an FLX and have had Prodigy, Protoy and RRD Venom but this is my fave.

SX came to grief after some heavy landings from the kickers at Scarborough. Snapped it, although in fairness it took some serious abuse over 2 seasons. RIP.

The Mako was borrowed for a few weeks from a friend who supplies OR in Canada. Used it plenty and great fun to boot. Was nursing a recent broken ankle at the time and the smoothness of the board was a joy to ride, great physio'.

If I was given the choice of either board new, I'd have to get the SX137, just so versatile and change of direction due to the shorter length is noticeably quicker.

If the board was to complement a twintip you already have in your quiver then the Mako would be the one.

Ive got a RRD Toxic wave which is probably more of a mutant but it rides really well both ways. Lots of fun, very fast board.

From a slightly different perspective ........

Put some 55mm fins on your normal twintip...... It's not as good as something more dedicated to the cause, but you will be very suprised how much grip the longer fins give you on the wave face.

$30 for bigger fins. Or $800-$1200 for a new mutant. It could be just what you are looking for to bridge the gap to your surfboard.

There isn't much video of twintips in waves.

This is a Mako ( I think its 150 by 40 )

and this is a Hammer (I'm guessing maybe the 2007 144? )

Gazza you only think you are rocketing upwind of me. In reality while you are turning that slug of yours I have ridden a wave in, carved a turn at the shore line, boosted twice off some nice ramps and then carved another turn. Hence I am now a little down wind of you.

Yeh was thinking the same thing, cheers for that. My TT is quite 'old' now. 2006ish I think. It's the old Jimmy lewis lithuim. Still love it, not as wide as the new tt's they make now.

I tend to ride it backwards out through the break when conditions require it. You need more back leg weight than a conventional TT and the board does not like going off the wind backwards since the bigger fins, now at the front, will catch if the board is too flat on the water. It edges well upwind backwards but I do sometimes run into large chop and bury it.

I ride about 70% of the time toeside. The board is easy this way but at the end of the day my back leg needs a rest. Also, I highly recommend a harness bar with a sliding hook (Jay Bar, see previous threads on this topic) The surf we get is less than ideal and I find the mutant the best option for me. Others may not agree.

I've set up the back foot strap to the middle section. Too far back and it is too hard to ride backwards. I've also changed the footstraps to a narrow, soft surfboard strap. The ones that come with it are too restrictive. The foot pads are very hard and unforgiving on landing but the board has plenty of flex so you get a soft ride.

The Shinn wave takes getting to know but if you like a board that carves big healside and toeside turns you'll love it. It will take all you can throw at it and bite deep into a turn. I don't like conventional TT any more.

I haven't ridden any other mutant to compare but I'm sure many are good. Hope this helps.

Certainly got a good selection Eppo, took the new toy for a spin yesterday for the last sesh of 2010. A great downwinder in cranking wind on the 5' 7"Wainman Gambler.

What a way to finish the year, a couple of cold ones to ease the thirst then rush home wash off the salt and down to the pub to see in the new year. aahhhh

Ha ha now a Wainman(heard good things about this board)!!! Do you have probs deciding which one to use?

So out of all of them, where does your mako sit?

Ps Vic supplier emailed me back, 'Sorry Eppo no demos only on line order. Mal'...

Weird hey, not exactly first class sales here. What a huge market in WA this board would fill. Surfing is predominant style over here...strange.

hey eppo,

I recently borrowed the 148 cardboard wave of aks while I waited for a CB freeride to turn up had a few sessions on it on the metro coast. I came close to swaping the 138 FR I had ordered for the wave. Its a great board easy to ride toeside, and backwards and jumps well off both directions and goes upwind well.

The three big fins at the back do help in the surf and combined with the outline (pulled in tips) it carves a nice tight turn. Its still a fly and follow board not a park and ride like a SB, but suits small perth slop for a bit of wave free style.

Its still easy to bunny hop 180, however it wont stick a hard carve like a SB i was still able break fins out and slide out in hard toeside hack.

Anything will work in the surf just depends what you want to do, the Cardboards worth a demo for sure.

cheers

cheers Shunter, yeh will take the cardboard out next week. Thanks for the feedback. A tt will never stick like a SB, but that's not what I'm after. Something that comes close but also gives the freedom on the twinny is what I'm after. I have more of a smooth, flowing style than an aggressive, hit, slash and chop - leave that to the younger blokes!

Just thought I'd say I am been so impressed with the input and even offer to demo, from crew on this forum.

This post is fast becoming a decent tool for those looking into surfing twin-tips.

Thanks everyone;

[i]sometimes I find some posts have become quite uncivil, where humorous banter becomes aggressive slander. But this is different and very helpful.
