okay, I have been interested in this board, but my experience of mutants has turned me off. Does it ride the other way well! Please not kind of well, how well honestly. I don't want to have to ride toe-side all the time. I only ride toe in the actual surf but like to ride goofy on way in to maximise upwind ground and also for rotational tricks coming in.?? Be honest, which way do you predominantly ride. Surely the back fins dig in on the way back.
I tend to ride it backwards out through the break when conditions require it. You need more back leg weight than a conventional TT and the board does not like going off the wind backwards since the bigger fins, now at the front, will catch if the board is too flat on the water. It edges well upwind backwards but I do sometimes run into large chop and bury it.
I ride about 70% of the time toeside. The board is easy this way but at the end of the day my back leg needs a rest. Also, I highly recommend a harness bar with a sliding hook
(Jay Bar, see previous threads on this topic) The surf we get is less than ideal and I find the mutant the best option for me. Others may not agree.
I've set up the back foot strap to the middle section. Too far back and it is too hard to ride backwards. I've also changed the footstraps to a narrow, soft surfboard strap. The ones that come with it are too restrictive. The foot pads are very hard and unforgiving on landing but the board has plenty of flex so you get a soft ride.
The Shinn wave takes getting to know but if you like a board that carves big healside and toeside turns you'll love it. It will take all you can throw at it and bite deep into a turn. I don't like conventional TT any more

.
I haven't ridden any other mutant to compare but I'm sure many are good. Hope this helps.
