Best Twin-tip in the surf?? Honestly...

okay chaps, been riding a surfboard strapped and unstrapped this summer and to be quite honest i keep gravitating back to my old lithium twintip.

So the question is from your own riding experience what is the best twintip you have ridden in small to medium surf (won't say large because surfboard is a must here).

yes surfing tt's, do they exist???

North Xride is a pretty good comprimise. Worth a demo anyway.

technically speaking being a mutant means it doesn't count as a twin tip. But I concur that mutants are best in the surf. I have a slingshot fuse that is a lot of fun in the waves. It's a good solution in smaller surf if you wan't to do some boosting as well as slash some walls.

Hey Bennie,

Technically speaking, the Wave 148 isn't a mutant as it is symetrical in plan and rocker. It's more of a twin tip with surf fins at one end. Mutants were more along the lines of directionals with twin tip fins on the nose.

Symantics really, either way, it's fun to ride!

I just love my Hammer if its a twinny you want. (hard to find though)
But Jimmy Lewis really knows how to make a board and, while I'm not a mad fan of mutants myself.

if ur already riding a directional and you want to go back to a TT, I'd seriously consider professional therapy

OR's Mako Wide 150 x 40 or even the 140 x 40 for smaller guys ... Mako King 165 x 45 mutant ... all go really well in chop as well ...






(do a search on that other forum "mako wide" - heaps of info)

The 130 (Mini), 140 , 150 (& King in T/T mode) all only have 1 centre fin each end


Massive 18mm Concave to smooth out chop and deliver hard carving performance.

2011 Mako 140, 150, and 165 can be set up to ride as a twin tip or mutant (thruster) stance.
All 2011 Makos feature a wood core construction for increased durability, laminate strength and a smoother, more poppy ride.

Again do you have to ride this toe-side - or does it go both ways well like a tt

hey that board looks amazing! How does it edge, and how does it stick in the face of a wave. Obviously not as good as a surfboard, but does it get close. What's it like in mushy on shore crap like we get in Perth/Mandurah. What's it like in bigger surf - say gnarloo?

Also does it boost like a TT?

A couple of the guys down Avalon are using Airush Hammers and seem pretty stoked with them.
Hard to find a second hand one though

Shinn wave board. Been riding one for about a year now. I won't go back to a conventional TT on flat water and it is loads of fun in the surf if you like powered turns on waves.

+1 on the Mako. The 150 is sooooo smooth in the surf. Loved it when I had one (not long enough, boo hoo!)

Had some great sessions in the WA slop on my, well Gills Slingshot SX137. Again a lovely smooth ride. Very unfreestyle feel, lovely smooth carves and plenty of grip for hacks and huge bottom turns. Not a current model but worth a look if one pops up in the used market.

problems with the mako:

availability and delay on ordering.
expensive
no demo (where I live anyway)

Also what about the underground freewave??

And the north Freestylefish?

I agree. Does everything not very well. But some dudes swear by them and crank it in the surf.
Had mutants, never again.

Definately the Mako, so smooth in the chop and goes upwind with ease. Have never seen another in WA so they don't get much exposure here.
The footpads would be the most comfortable I've ridden on.

The Hammer are a good board but a little prone to breaking with the wrong rider.

Hey moony, haven't seen you out at pyramids for a while. Cool I'm flying there today will see if anyone is out. yeh the hammer looks like the same principle as the mako, but without the huge concave. An option one feels.
