A California woman who reportedly described herself as "unmasked, unmuzzled, unvaccinated and unafraid" has died of COVID-19.

Kristen Lowery, 40, died a week ago after contracting the virus and developing pneumonia, leaving behind four children, the Daily Mail reported.

Before she died, Lowery reportedly posted anti-vaccination material on Facebook, describing herself as a "free thinker" and an "ex-vaxxer". The page has since been made private.

A GoFundMe crowdfunding page set up to pay her funeral expenses claimed she died "suddenly and unexpectedly", without mentioning what killed her.

But her sister had previously posted she was "in the hospital fighting for her life against COVID and pneumonia", telling others she did "not care about your opinion on vaccinated or not". An aunt also wrote Lowery had "lost her battle against COVID".

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health and Social Care
(Maria Caulfield)

I congratulate the hon. Member for North West Leicestershire (Andrew Bridgen) on securing this important debate. I only have five minutes of this 30-minute debate to respond. I will try to cover all the points if I can.

Can I start by acknowledging that the hon. Member is correct that we have seen an increase in excess deaths in the last year? However, I disagree with his analysis, because the causes that he refers to simply do not bear out the statistics that we have. There has been a combination of factors contributing to the increase in excess deaths, including, in the last year, high flu prevalence, the ongoing challenges of covid-19, a strep A outbreak and conditions such as heart disease, which he touched on, diabetes and cancer. Because we had had virtually a lockdown of routine health services over a two-year period, many people are now coming forward with increased morbidity and mortality as a result.

I will start with winter flu. The number of positive tests last year peaked at 31.8%, the highest figure seen in the last six years. Interim analysis from the UKHSA indicates that the number of deaths in England associated with flu was far higher than pre-pandemic levels, so the excess deaths due to flu last winter are, sadly, part of the answer.

The hon. Member touched on the independent body, the ONS. Its figures show that the leading cause of death in England is still dementia, which accounts for about 10% of all deaths. It also looks at the cause of excess deaths. If we look at the figures as of June this year, the top three causes of excess deaths are respiratory illnesses, dementia and ischaemic heart disease, which is often caused by an increase in cholesterol, smoking or not having a blood pressure check. There are a number of reasons, and they are often chronic conditions that people have had for years, or in some cases for decades; they are not acute illnesses.

In the three minutes I have left to respond, I will touch on some of the points that the hon. Member made. First, on the importance of vaccination, it is very Toggle showing location ofColumn 568easy to say that there is a prevalence of high rates of covid vaccination in people who have died. That is correct: when 93.6% of the population have had at least one dose of the vaccine, there will be a high rate of vaccination in excess deaths. That is different from causality. I completely agree with the hon. Member that there is a high prevalence rate, but that is not the same as saying that vaccination is the cause of those deaths.

The Office for National Statistics has looked at this, and those who have been vaccinated have generally had a lower all-cause mortality rate than unvaccinated people since the introduction of the booster in 2021. A recent study in Singapore looked at unvaccinated patients who had recovered from covid, and showed that those patients had a 56% higher risk of cardiac complications a year later than those who were vaccinated. There is conflicting data on this issue, and I am not necessarily disagreeing with the hon. Member, but I think we need to have a robust conversation about it, not to assume that one side necessarily has all the answers.

I will touch on a couple of points that the hon. Member made about vaccine safety. The regulator has been taking account of those who report adverse events, and I encourage anyone who has had a side effect from any of the vaccines to use the yellow card system and report it to their GP. When those side effects have been reported, the MHRA has taken action. In April 2021, the MHRA reacted to rare cases of concurrent thrombosis and thrombocytopenia following the AZ vaccine, which resulted in adults under 30 not being offered that vaccine. In May 2021, that was increased to adults under 40. With regard to the mRNA vaccine specifically, following reports of a link between covid vaccines and myocarditis, the Commission on Human Medicines conducted an independent review in June 2021, which found that the incidence of that side effect was rare: between one and two cases per 100,000. When there are concerns, we absolutely must investigate them. There is no doubt about that.

We had a debate earlier this afternoon about those who have experienced rare side effects from the vaccine. We do have the vaccine damage payment scheme, which offers a payment of ?120,000 if that is shown to be-

It's great to see that the government is listening and working on that random pillock's case. He seemed very emotional when he interrupted the forum with his unsubstantiated rant. It's probably a sign he's on the mend being so full of beans and fired up. He didn't seem unwell to me, I liked his jordy accent. I'm glad the poor sod is feeling a lot better after having that dreadful jab.

That Palestinian prisoner who was flattened by that IDF tank didn't get that same opportunity to complain.

Nah, I just find it tiring when people stamp their feet, yell at everybody, and then storm out.

and then come back.

I often wonder if they are drama queens in real life or just somehow expecting someone to care.

One guy came back heaps of times often with different logins. At least you have just forgotten and come back with the same username.

Wot! You think there are worse things than having a sore arm, headache, and fever for a few days?? As if!

We have it the worst here in Aus. They stopped us from flying interstate! One guy even had to do polls with random people in pubs for months, in between sailing sessions, in order to understand the effect it has had on us all.

Those Palestinians, Israelis, Ukrainians, and Russian soldiers don't know how easy they have it...

Hey, come on now. He is clearly going away to research a few papers and see if the adverse events are what he initially thought they were. He is then going to come up with a well thought out reply and show the results of his research.

Not a meme.

Nah. I said I was considering it. Then Carantoc came through with the brain wave that I'm better off not pandering to the whim of such clients. It's worked out very well. Also, I'm no longer using words that could be misconstrued as hate speech against government representatives on social media. Once was enough.

That's really not fair towards Laurie. The page is a business. Failure is not an option. Unlike MSM, he hasn't got billions to fall back on. And the moderators aren't a bunch of former supreme Court justices, they do as good as you could ask of any regular human.

If most Australians were pro-science there wouldn't have been a need for mandates and lockdowns. A number of countries managed COVID quite well without mandates, because compliance with science-based advice among the general population was high.

Smack-bang right on the head there remery. Boom, jackpot bullseye.

If only the politicans and the pseudo-politicians who stood behind them followed the science we wouldn't have had lockdowns. And without lockdowns we wouldn't have needed the mandates as the only politciaclly palettable way out of the lockdowns.

You are right. As soon as they all started to try to out-do each other, as soon as they had to top the daily statistics, that is when it all turned to ****.

Whatever it takes to be 100% Covid free in New Zealand, Jacinta declared. Then they all had follow. Couldn't be out-covidid by Jacinta. No horrible NSW-covid in Victoria was Dan's political promise. So you needed a permit to enter. McGowan could go one better - no eastern states covid in precious WA - so the whole border shut. Wait, Anna promised anything required to guarantee no child in Qld would die with Covid - so the barricades went up down the middle of the street. Those on the wrong side were infected scum who had to be repelled for the greater good.

And from there there was only ever going to be one way out. A vaccine had to be found. And it had to work. So it was, and it did.

And now we are here.

So, yep remery I couldn't agree with you more - of only they had continued the intiial science based approach, suppress and herd immunity was the pollies phrase - then we wouldn't have had lockdowns and ergo, we would not have needed mandates.
