What I find fascinating about this is that the question is being raised at all
Australia like most western democracies is a representative democracy You elect
your representatives and then they wield enormous power over the country and its citizens until the next elections and noone seems to know whether the above article about the prime minister is true or not
In other words noone seems to know diddly squat about who is representing them what their values or agendas are or much else
Yes Hiko. Really representative democracy has met it's use by date. The idea of us getting together once every three or four years to elect someone to represent us for the next three or four years is really quite laughable. How many Aussies wanted our federal politicians to have a huge pay rise?
The party political system is an antithesis to representative democracy. However we have a system where they are fused at the hip. The fusion is more abhorrent when you consider the incredibly narrow membership base of political parties. In no way do they represent society.
The issue is they are all the same. The most quickest solution is for voters to vote against sitting members. Safe seats are treated as valuable property by political parties. If citizens made safe seats worthless we would be on our way to restoring democracy. We wouldn't have to worry about Julia or Tony if they were voted out of office. One of the greatest events of modern Australian politics was when John Howard lost his seat.
I think that'd have to rate as one of the smartest, best posts I've read on this forum in the political vein, mobydisc. You get a green thumb from me sir.
Think a bit harder mate, none of that makes any sense.

Everyone is quite clear it's a badly done fake
In other words noone seems to know diddly squat about who is representing them what their values or agendas are or much else
All that info is out there for the reading. What you mean is you (and perhaps your mates) don't know diddly squat cos you can't be bothered reading boring political crap and you're projecting that onto everyone else.

Your nomination for better system would be......?

For you maybe. I don't want to be voting more often that that, and I really don't want to have 2 years of election hype like the yanks. In case you didn't realise, it takes time to do things. 2-4 years is a minimum to keep an election promise, draft & pass a new law, put in a new road or railway, etc.

I think they do. Maybe not your group of mates, but again that's projecting that everyone is the same as you. It's a free country, you can join any party if you feel strongly enough. You can even start your own if you think your views represent the people more than the established parties.

Change for the sake of it has no value. All that would do is make it a continual break in period / learning curve where pollies were always new at the job. Look at any new employee they are generally fairly worthless for a while.
