- The older you get the better the hotel you need, bcos the more time you spend in it.
- Italians, French and Swiss make the best desserts. Italians rule ice cream and things like Tiramisu, the French rock pastry and the Swiss pretty good at both.
- Don't expect to be able to buy ANYTHING in Switzerland for less than $10.
- If there's a stupid question to be asked, an American will ask it. Like standing on a new wood footpath in Rome's coliseum... is this the original wood?
- Thai people are probably the nicest people, followed by Australians (outside cities).
- Don't try and be cool by going to the back streets of a tourist resort looking for local cuisine... it's a snake pit, go to where there's the most competition for your money.

that travel for the sake of it kinda sucks. I'd rather go camping in aus with my toys than to some overseas supposedly exotic destination and wish i had them there or be forced to pay heaps for the privilidge

Don't put a traditional mechanical alarm clock in your case. You will find yourself way out on the tarmac at Mumbai airport opening your bag for people armed with sub-machines guns...

Don't let your wife supply her own suitcase... she'll get a big one and YOU will have to carry it along with yours, or look like a dick for making her lug it around.

Selected hotels in Mumbai will let you charge your room to your Medicare card

Israeli soldiers do not think it is funny when you skip stones from one side of the River Jordan to the other.

Don't get locked in a South African game park after sunset

and I really want to get back to NZ, Tauranga is the first place I have visited outside Australia I would happily move to

do not ask the staff in Fiji where is a cool place to have a drink, you'll end up in the crappiest place you've ever seen with ugly hookers coming in one after the other to offer their services.
And when you'll tell the staff about your bad experience, one of them will offer his young niece at a discounted rate....

Japanese gangsters don't appreciate it when you try and skip out on a $2600 tab at their "Entertainment" venues.

If you get invited to an underground cricket fight in Singapore, the minimum bet is 1000 Singapore dollars, whilst it is nice to win it is probably safer to lose, the crickets are kept under lights in little glass aquariums and get light for 12 hours and dark for twelve ( or something like that from what I gathered) I called them hydro crickets. No one laughed ..tough crowd. Best meal in Singapore was duck cooked in a whole watermelon.

All peoples are pretty much the same the World over. The same hopes, fears and aspirations. It's only organised nation-states, tribes, religions and such that create "us-and-them" divides.

But travel exposes it for what it is.

1. Stay calm and don't panic - ever.

2. Don't even think of bribing a government official.

3. There will be another plane.

-Americans aren't as bad as they're made out to be.
-Smile. People like friendly people.
-Never visit the same place twice.
-Taking the mrs to an active volcano thats having small eruptions all the time and standing on the rim looking in, isn't her idea of adventure

Yep I agree with that one
Mostly you will enjoy travel if you keep an open mind about the locals and their customs
Don't fall for the usual Amerikan tourist trait of comparing everything with home

Travel insurance. It is a must. So cheap and I would be $100,000 (roughly) down if we didn't have it.
Oh and travel insurance.
