after a really muddy game of Saturday morning league my dad used to put me and mate into the boot to drive home so not to get the car dirty, no probs

riding in the back of a ute just sitting and not worrying.

being at the beach all day surfing and NOT getting sunburned at all let alone in 15 minutes.

girls wearing crochet bikinis that when wet got a little saggy, hee hee.
(well, we were 14)

According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s probably shouldn't have survived, because our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which was regularly chewed and licked.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles or latches on doors or cabinets, and it was fine to play with pans. When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip-flops and fluorescent 'spokey dokeys' on our wheels.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags and riding in the front passenger seat - or the boot - was a treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle, and it tasted the same.

We ate chips, bread and butter pudding, and drank fizzy juice with sugar in it, but were never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one drink with four friends - from one bottle or can - and no one actually died from it.

We would spend several hours building go-carts out of scraps, then go top speed down the hill, only to find out we'd forgotten the brakes. After running into a patch of stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back before dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded.

We didn't have Playstations or Xboxes - no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape films, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no DVDs, no internet chatrooms.

We had friends - we went outside and found them. We played French skipping and rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt! We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones, but there were no law suits.

We played Knock Down Ginger and were actually afraid of the owners catching us. We walked to friends' homes. We also, believe it or not, walked to school; we didn't rely on Mummy or Daddy to drive us to school, as it was just round the corner.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls. We rode bikes in packs of seven and wore our coats by only the hood. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of they actually sided with the law.

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem-solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
And you're one of them. Congratulations! Pass this on to others who had the luck to grow as real kids, before lawyers and the government regulated our lives for "our own good".

For those of you who aren't old enough, we thought you might like to read about us.

And something else to put a smile on your face...
The majority of students in universities today were born in 1986. The Uptown Girl they know is by Westlife not Billy Joel. They have never heard of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Neneh Cherry or Belinda Carlisle.

For them, there has always been only one Germany and one Vietnam. AIDS has existed since they were born. CDs have existed since they were born. Michael Jackson has always been white. To them, John Travolta has always been round in shape and they can't imagine how this fat guy could ever have been a god of dance.

They believe that Charlie's Angels and Mission Impossible are films from the past ten years. They can never imagine life before computers. They'll never have pretended to be the A-Team, the Dukes of Hazzard or the Famous Five. They can't believe a black and white television ever existed. And they will never understand how we could leave the house without a mobile phone

Sorry Liz..... It wasn't personal. I too have my mobile phone on me at all times and it is never turned off. Don't have the necessity for a laptop but if I did have one it too would be with me everywhere.

There are good and bad with both scenarios (some of us have had the pleasure of experiencing both though)

I'm just lucky enough to still have most of my old toys and my brother's old toys so that my kids get to play with real toys. However all the good stuff is making a comeback!!!! Transformers, Astro Boy etc..

i was born in 1986. no im not in uni.
as for the said artists.. no i dont know half them, but thats not to say i dont know any of the other oldies or have a good taste in music.

germany was taught to us both ways but there has only been one vietnam.

cds didnt come out until later, so no i wasnt born with them.
michael jackson was still black but fading
John Travolta was all the rage with my girlfriends and their moms.. just not my rage. i personally do not find him the least bit attractive even in his prime.

charlies angels was rubish, maybe good to pass time and mission impossible was good, shame about the main actor!

and i can most certainly remember a life without computers or internet and even cell phones. now i simply use the computer to pass time at work and watch movies as i dont have a tv. but im well aware of the black and white tv and even soundless movies as those are my dads favorites.

me and my friends are the A team

and to be honest.. i dont mind "forgetting" my cell phone for a day(s)

so my dearest mytchook dont lose hope, not all of us are completely depended on the new technology sort of lifestyle running around like mad cow consumers.

i much like yourselfs prefer the simple days and their simple ways x sez

Spot on mytchook I remember all of what you said and loved every bit of those day's. I was born in ''76'' and apart from all those things you mentioned i have a couple more that i remember......

"I remember when....."

- i was driving back to the country from Adelaide and my old man had just bought a Beta video recorder and the war movie "Von Ryans Express". This thing was huge and had big buttons that you had to push down on to operate. We were one of the first in our town to have one and there wasn't a video store for another six months. ( how ironic i was one of the first to have a DVD player in this same town before any of the video store's had DVD's)

- in South Australia we used to get 20 cent deposit for a 1 litre glass bottle of soft drink and we would take 5 of them to the deli and get 100 lollies.

- some guy's came to our school sponsored by coke to show us the new craze of yo yo's

-the only time as kid's we watched t.v. during the day was when the cricket, footy or the olympic's was on. Then not long after we would go outside and re-enact them.

-pinball machine's were all the craze and they only 20cents to play

- my parent's used to take me to the drive-in and make me hide behind the driver's seat with a blanket over me so they didn't have to pay........cheap buggers

I dunno, I always thought it had a plasticy taste from coming through the hose. Probably some highly toxic and carcinogenic by-product of the manufacturing process, but it was bloody good on hot days. Probably didn't help that it was irrigation water from a dam that was pumped into an open tank where kookaburras regularly got trapped and died in.

I remember, as a kid, going up to the local junior footy oval with some mates in summer to throw a frizbee, getting hot and turning the sprinklers on.....running around under them......drinking from the hoses.....and then some guy coming up to us and telling us that it was "recycled sewerage treatment water".....after he left, we kept at it....I didn't know what the hell he meant, and besides - we were rebels, never did what grown-ups told us!!!

Thank God we have triple J and SBS so we dont have to listen to and watch the repeats of this crap. Mind youI prefered MJ's " Off the Wall " to "Thriller"
I cant believe my kids prefer some of that old stuff to all the new music that is coming out next wek
