An evolutionary freak is usually greatly deformed. The greater the random mutation, the greater the chance it is a bad mutation.. So at no point will a Chimp or frog will give birth to a more intelligent new super species that will overtake us.. All natural offspring look pretty much identical to their parents.
You know that reminds me of a theory (speculation based on available facts) I read about that was kick started by the interesting situation where infant chimps looked very similar to human infants. ie pale, no full covering of body hair etc. As chimps get older they develop the hair and bent over stance etc. It was also noted that young primates (and lots of other mamals for that matter) have an exceptional abilitiy to learn and adapt, but as they get older tend to be less flexible and more habitual in nature. ie you can't teach an old dog new tricks....
It was noted that while chimps become more chimplike as they age, humans tend to maintain thier infant attributes more.
DNA analysis has traced modern humans back to a population of less than a thousand. It is believed that this small colony developed through a series of mutations to one gene that made the humans less inclined to develop the "old dog" traits. ie maintained the higher intelligence and ability to reason and adapt that infants had and took them through to adulthood.
It is likely there was high survival pressure on the species that we were and the changes gave us significant advantage in survival in the enviornment we were in. Whilst there were a lot of other changes the quantum leap forward in intelligence and advanced reasoning were the key, and this small colony survived whereas others that did not benefit from the change died out.
The loss of adult body hair was a side effect that could be overcome with the intelligence gained, and probably led to another development of dark skin if this happened in Africa etc.
There was a lot more substance to it than what I remember but that was the guts of it.
