So the bathers were found on the ocean floor some 300 metres from shore in 20+ft of water where this bloke was last seen?, yet there was no obvious spoil of such an attack. An hour later when the search started, after such a violent shark attack which dislodged the bathers, would there be body parts etc still in the vicinity? given it was a calm day or ocean currents would push in the direction of wind yet the bathers just stayed on the ocean floor where he was taken? too many unresolved issues for me?, it sounds like the old Chinese sub like the same one that took Harold Holt is still in Australian waters, all this obviously written with all due respect to the missing bloke.

"no obvious spoils of such an attack" that we know of.

I don't think the police would disclose if there was anything left in the speedo's that were found to the media out of respect to the poor blokes family. Wouldn't be hard for a white to polish of someone or "most" of someone in a couple of go's.

We cant stop the Japanese culling whales with lots of effort and support of this fine nation.

Whales dont eat as many humans as sharks do, as far as I know.

Why dont we collectively convince the Whalers to become Sharkers.

Im not saying kill all sharks but I think the whales have had enough.

Its time for a change

Save the tourist $ make people feel safe!

whale populations increase gws population stabilize.

I await my lashings

I agree GF - there are more attacks , and there are more Great Whites since bans were placed on culling/exterminating them.
There aren't many victims of GW attacks that survive - that bloody jaw comes right out their monstrous heads and it nothing more than a giant pair of multi- toothed metal shears with a bite pressure in tonnes of pressure - freaky freaky poo.

I can understand the need for protection of sharks in the past but are their numbers are now out of kilter in the food chain?

Perhaps it is a pity that many of the lower on the food chain fishies aren't as protected as the GWs.

Maybe then we wouldn't have so many large very hungry killing machines curious/desperate enough to try 'the other white meat'.

Gotta have something to do with the seals, penguins & whales GF ..... that's the preferred foodie stuff for 'em isn't it?
There's something going on with the water temp in the currents between Sth Africa and us too (saw something bout this on the idiotbox recently but had some beer that night so tiny bit vague is my exact recollection tho ....)
We probably wouldn't have so much of a drama with GW's if it weren't for that downright nasty fang-set - nothing can survive it , well intact anyways!

Harden the fark up GF, you cannot justify exterminating a species because you're a little scared to put your big toe in the deep end..

Great whites deserve to be protected, they would be extinct if they weren't.. They are an Apex predator that is a relic of an age where the Oceans were full of massive carnivores, and the Ocean needs carnivores like any other environment.. They don't need to be culled, we ALREADY DID THAT.. The population is now vulnerable thanks to us..

Humans on the other hand, don't deserve any protection, we are smart enough to assess risks, and like others have said, if you're too chicken sh!t to swim with fish then don't go in the water..

Tiger attacks are increasing in India, does that men we cull the Tiger population? No, the Indians need to change their habits..

If ever there was an organised cull of Great White Sharks I think I would have to go vigilante on all cowards responsible.. People are a million times more dangerous than sharks..

I think the figure is something like 90 million sharks a year are killed..Trust me sharks numbers are not out of kilter. Simply the fact is less food in the ocean has meant sharks are looking for food so coming into contact with humans more.

To explain its a bit more like our population and were we live. More people are coming to one area only and so are the sharks. Its not rocket science..

Also, Sharks save lives.. Humans irrational fear of sharks in deep water results in less people swimming 300m offshore and drowning themselves.. Cause water is more dangerous than sharks (just about everything is)

Settle down ther Barnstormer

I'm asking a question not demanding extermination or anything of the like. But feel free to jump off the deep end..

As sometimes happens with protected species the numbers can swell creating issues of it's own.

Maybe wee need to eat far more squid? They are possibly the next smartest creature on earth after us dumb bipods, but their numbers are going berko apparently.

Or maybe we should reduce human numbers and get some soilent green happening. Human rings anyone?

Really we could do with some human culling...That would help us all

But not very popular a opinion..

All i can say is that i would suggest everyone stays out of the water over the weekend. Especially up North on Sat and down south on Sunday

...... well on the lighter side of things - the UNCIRCUMCISED amongst us have a squid ring on the end of their knobs....possibility of a fromage culture there too so mr whitey gets meat & cheese >>>> we puny humans only have to evolve a form of vegetation to our DNA - and whammo the Carcharadons have the complete snack!

haha it's ok I'm not actually mad.. This is just as amusing to me as every other idea I disagree with!

My vigilante efforts would consist me walking around slapping people until they turned into Respectable Men..

This is a dramatization of said slaps..

Alright so check it out... I'm no marine biologist but take a look at the attached image which demonstrates Perth's "Shark Attack Zone" to figure out where in Perth a shark attack may be more likely to occur. Every major attack in Perth has occurred in this Shark Attack Zone with the exception of a couple of bull shark attacks in the Swan River back in the day.

In the attached Google Earth image, the white line marks the Shark Attack Zone and the yellow thumb tacks show the locations of the previous attacks at Cottesloe, Rockingham and Garden Island. The Shark Attack Zone forms part of a reef habitat that stretches from Rockingham to Garden Island to Rottnest Island to Cottesloe. Given the high frequency of attacks in this area it is at least arguable that is less safe to enter the water in or near the Shark Attack Zone.

Also the fact that the mouth of the Swan River is only a stones throw from Cottesloe may also increase the likelihood of attacks as well as the fact that it is currently the migratory period for whales during the months of September to December. The Estuary in Mandurah being in relatively close proximity to the Shark Attack Zone may also indicate a higher likelihood of attack in Mandurah.

Regardless of all this theorising... the chances of being attacked in the Shark Attack Zone are still extremely remote but anything is possible. In reality you can be attacked in WA waters anywhere and at anytime. You either accept the risk or don't surf just like you accept the risks to drive on the roads.

I think I'll avoid Cott and Mandurah this Weekend! Peace out!
