Accelerating quickly would be a novel experience on a spray ! But I take your and kankama's points of the heavier chain being a more comfortable ride in certain circumstances. Cheers

Weight isn't the issue, during the fit out I've remove probably 100kg from the not so pointy end, space has become the concern, before the whole bow section was dedicated to chain spare anchors rolls of rope etc. now the bow is accomodation & the chain locker is smaller. But flaking heavy chain is preferable to being on the stupid sailor program. I guess I'm hoping to take advantage of the upgrade in anchor from the CQR and lay off in chain size. Thanks for the comments, keep em coming I'm not sold either way yet. Cheers

10t displacement, doesn't present as much windage as some & draw 1.2m with a long keel so I'm comfortable anchoring in shallow water

Time has come to replace anchor & chain. I'm reasonably sure I'll go with the excell #5 anchor. The quiz is chain size, originally issue was 30mm of 10mm, which weighs 69kg, 45m of 8mm weighs 68kg, I have both 10mm &8mm Gypsy's, the 8mm is $130 cheaper, either way a 14mm top rode will be onboard. Thoughts about 10mm v 8mm ?

I'm not suggesting full blown cat 1 or a RYA certification, at least a general boating license would introduce elements of safety at sea, colregs & passage planning. It might avoid a situation like the tragedy in Ballina

I agree with woke, there needs to be something more.

Anyone who spends too much time on any of the other social platforms would have to have noticed the hugely varied answers and opinion to posts and questions such as 'what does this mean' or 'who gives way'. I know some of those posts are designed to create an argument (more than discussion) and a lot of commenters are just keyboard warriors who've never progressed from playing with plastic toys in the bath tub, but there are a lot of real sailors amongst them too.

Here in WA and it's probably the same in all Aust states, you can go and get your skippers ticket on the river in a little aluminium dingy and then go skipper your 50' Riviera straight away. Its scary.

I've been called lots of things but woke is new one

Let's not suggest certificates of competency, we could end up going down the NZ path with CAT 1 requirements to depart the country. Or an ICC requirement.
One of the joys of sailing in Australia is minimal bureaucracy,
The biggest yacht owning cohort are boomers, they are getting on a bit, we will probably see more of this.

And I've been informed it was anchored for a week & the tender was at the surf club. Obviously couldn't make it back out through the swell ....

^^^ returning to port is a bigger issue than leaving after a day out ! On a serious note not any sort of licence / qualification/ certificate is required to cruise the coast. The case at hand if old mate was a retired pro fisher, his certificate of competence should be reviewed, he could of motored to south port

It's that time of year again, apparently the anchor chain broke while he was ashore getting something to repair his broken boom ! Only had 40miles to go to where he was to haul out, tweed or Ballina ? Both challenging bars will a good easterly swell ... There will be more before the month is out

I'm not surprised if that is the case, that boat has been in the river for years, has changed hands a few times. There's an issue with move on orders, I really hope that's not background story.

A tragic accident indeed. Lots of community support for the families & VMR. Some calls for dredging the bar, but I can't see that happening. IMHO education for coastal operations is overdue. I'm not saying the yachtsman had no idea & could have been caught out, but most of these sort of incidents happen because of poor planning.

If I may, I would suggest getting excited about the mirror you have, do stuff with it , fish, motor, camp cruise, campaign it. Doors will open. Check out small craft Tasmania for inspiration. A boat you can put back on the trailer & forget about for awhile has a lot of upsides, a keel boat is a way of life, otherwise it becomes another one of neglected fleet that is already an issue. Enjoy what you have!
