Yet another of the - "grey haired old man lets his boat on the shore" story.

www.abc.net.au/news/2026-05-12/byron-community-helps-beached-boatie/106670510

I mean who anchors off Byron and goes ashore in an onshore breeze? How is that even concievable? Anchoring off a famous surf break in an onshore wind is never a seamanlike thing to do. People like this give us a bad name. I have another year or two before I head off again. By that time they will probaby have legislated to stop 60s and over being allowed offshore on their own. So thanks a lot.

Certainly gives ex-professional fishermen a bad name!
So an anchor gave way. Let's see what sort of CQR it was!

It's that time of year again, apparently the anchor chain broke while he was ashore getting something to repair his broken boom ! Only had 40miles to go to where he was to haul out, tweed or Ballina ? Both challenging bars will a good easterly swell ... There will be more before the month is out

The guy did not choose the weather well for refloating. Although the tide is great in the next few days the swell will be over 2 metres for about a fortnight. So bugger about that.

I am skeptical of the idea of using a trawler to tow the boat. The bollard pull of a 50ft trawler could be about 3 tonnes. This is nothing compared to what you can do with a system of anchors and pulleys led to the sheet winches.

I remember about a year ago there was a similar situation in Coffs. An old crappy steel 50ft yacht washed ashore and the guy had locals in the water pushing on the hull at high tide. A few lines led to large danforths and to winches could have pulled him clear.
I winched my 4000kg cat off a sandbank in a gale with a single danforth kedge and 100m of nylon. You gotta get the anchors out as soon as possible.

Maybe there is some inexperience or ineptitude that comes along with calling a block a "spring block" or thinking that it is important to fix the boom by going ashore at Byron (I mean what is on shore at Byron?) or buying an old steelie and having it so the boom breaks and not being able to sail along to Southport under genny alone. I once tried to help a guy who waterways were hassling at Wooli. His trimaran had ripped a hole in its bum. I tried assisting the owner until he said I was stressing him out and he needed to go back inside and take it easy. I don't think that ended well.

At least this Catalina was light enough to be lifted by a truck

^^^ returning to port is a bigger issue than leaving after a day out ! On a serious note not any sort of licence / qualification/ certificate is required to cruise the coast. The case at hand if old mate was a retired pro fisher, his certificate of competence should be reviewed, he could of motored to south port

And I've been informed it was anchored for a week & the tender was at the surf club. Obviously couldn't make it back out through the swell ....

Let’s not suggest certificates of competency, we could end up going down the NZ path with CAT 1 requirements to depart the country. Or an ICC requirement.
One of the joys of sailing in Australia is minimal bureaucracy,
The biggest yacht owning cohort are boomers, they are getting on a bit, we will probably see more of this.

What’s an ‘old fart’? I mean what do you consider an old fart?

When I was 20 I considered 50 being old. Now that I’m 50 I consider myself still young.
I know, I’ll see myself out 😎

I'm not suggesting full blown cat 1 or a RYA certification, at least a general boating license would introduce elements of safety at sea, colregs & passage planning. It might avoid a situation like the tragedy in Ballina

I have a Japanese Class 1 license.
In Japan the licenses are basically designed for fishers.
It is expensive ($1200) and difficult . A practical and a written test.
In the practical you have to find what is wrong with the boat before you pull away from the dock.
The test boat is fitted with hidden switches which disable certain nav lights, engine room blower, horn etc.
The trickiest one is the boat could be fitted with an out of date fire extinguisher. Miss the safety and pre-departure inspection and you can't pull away.
You have lost your $60 boat test booking fee and you have to make another booking.
The license is renewed every 5 years.
With a video on boating safety.
An update on regulations and the general navigational hazards in your area and a lecture which dissects a recent marine accident.
Why did it happen? What should have been the procedure to prevent that accident?
The guy who ran out of petrol at night then the fog fell and he drifted into the shipping lane was a beauty.
I have always found that part of the 3 hour renewal process quite informative.

We can all learn from the old farts, especially their mistakes.

No snubber or chain lock, just the windlass taking all the load?
I saw a youtube sailor lost his boat the same way a few years ago, windlass failed when the wake from passing ferries caused the boat to rock, the chain paid out at speed, bitter end snapped and the boat went up on a reef and the keel got wedged between rocks in calm conditions. It got salvaged but was toast and ended up in the tip.

Whats the deal with NZ?
If you sail over there for a brief visit do you have to get inspected if you want to leave again?

The NZ Regulations are for NZ registered boats only.

Cut and paste below:

“Anyone intending to take a recreational boat overseas must complete an International Voyage Certificate (pleasure craft) application through Maritime NZ.
Skippers (Masters) must apply for an International Voyage Certificate (IVC) with Maritime NZ, rather than for a category 1 certificate with Yachting New Zealand as in previous years. This change came into effect on July 1, 2024
The law requires the Director of Maritime NZ to be satisfied that the following are adequate for the intended voyage:
• the boat
• the safety equipment it carries, and
• the crew”.

I agree with woke, there needs to be something more.

Anyone who spends too much time on any of the other social platforms would have to have noticed the hugely varied answers and opinion to posts and questions such as 'what does this mean' or 'who gives way'. I know some of those posts are designed to create an argument (more than discussion) and a lot of commenters are just keyboard warriors who've never progressed from playing with plastic toys in the bath tub, but there are a lot of real sailors amongst them too.

Here in WA and it's probably the same in all Aust states, you can go and get your skippers ticket on the river in a little aluminium dingy and then go skipper your 50' Riviera straight away. Its scary.

Yet more in the old farts being really stupid - a ****ty old steelie that has been a pain in the arse for locals ends up on the beach. The ****ty old boats are getting reduced in numbers but there are still many more to go

2 of the last 3 were subject to move on orders, all 3 were acts of stupidity. I was under the impression the annual east coast ground season was foolish people buying cheap boats and heading to the reef, but now I'm starting to wonder if it's not an annual enforcement programme. After the steelies, ferro & woodys are trashed, composites will be next on line.
