yes, volume and bouyancy are technically 2 different things.
in windsurfing edit* generally, volume was actually referring to bouyancy. same with surfing. in which case the weight is part of the equation. and to take that further the weight of the layup must be taken into account.
i can say with absolute confidence that my custom boards are describing the bouyancy. so when i buy a 100lt board i know it will float 100kg
it is in the manufacturers interest to talk volume rather than bouyancy for obvious reasons.
The volume of a house brick is exactly the same as the volume of a replica brick made of foam.... The formula for volume is base*width*height.. A board can be divided up into a billion tiny cubes and the volume is then calculated..QED... Why would windsurfers do it any other way? The volume tells us how big the board is..
It is in the manufactures interest to talk in volume because it makes perfect sense!! And we, the public understand... When Starboard did the virtual volume thing, everybody lost their minds.. There where riots, embassy's were razed, cars toppled and many Starboard distributors were never seen again..
When I buy a 100lt board, I want a 100lt board dammit!!
If you want to talk about how much the board floats then there is a perfectly good word for it: buoyancy.... There is no better word, and calling it volume is heretical... But If you want to measure windsurfing in buoyancy, then you shouldn't stop at calculating the boards buoyancy, the actual buoyancy must include your mast, downhaul rope, sail, wetsuit, G10 fin, Air pressure, salinity and lunch...
