Just got confirmation that Chile is out. Bring on the double elimination!

so, unless koster does super super well in a bunch of heats, does that make mussollini the new overall title holder for '13?

well, depends how many points they get with their final ranking, here is what I could extract from the PWA website

Points/(final rank)
2100 (1)
2067 (2)
2034 (3)
2001 (4)
1968 (5)
1935 (6)
1886 (7)
1787 (9)
1655 (13)
1457 (17)
1193 (25)

do your math ;-)

So can someone explain exactly how a double elimination works?

Siver won the single, so who would be the overall winner if for example he bombed out in the first or second round and someone like Victor or Koester won the double elim? Would it be who ever has the two best results for both elims wins ? So if Seadi came second agan in the double, he would be the overall winner ?

See this for a good explaination. Essentially it works so that you have to lose twice to get eliminated.

wikipedia double elimination

overall after first round :

1. Alex Mussolini
2. Marcilio Browne
3. Victor Fernandez
4. Thomas Traversa
5. Jules Denel
6. Philip K??ster
7. Leon Jamaer
8. Ricardo Campello

Koster just has no chance to be world champion, especially he's facing Fernandez and Copello in next round

how would you score a double forward off the lip? essentially a jump..

versus nice top to bottom fluid turns, cutbacks and stunts in the pocket...????

If it's off the lip and landed back on the wave it a wave score.

Its a wave score so its going to depend a lot on the wave. Off the biggest wave of the day and right in a critical section with a clean landing I would think nearly ten as its the sort of move that would make the mainstream media but off a crappy inside section maybe only a six or seven. Kosters forward in the heats didnt score much but it was off a small wave and landed in the white water but it did give a hint of what he might have done if he could have found a quality wave.

Sorry Holmes I got thrown off by the "essentially a jump" comment indicating you thought it should be a jump score.

So koster and siver both get identical waves and take them down from green trees to the end bowl.

Koster takes the high line and blows off a lot of the wave to get speed enough to make the double rotation off the lip and land back on the face.
Levi goes top to bottom, showcasing a surfing style. hacks it apart, gets under the lip and punts then say maybe gets a 360, goiter taka or whatever along the way.

how do you think the judges would score it?

double of the lip fully sick but I'd score levi's wave higher.

Just trying to throw it out there for debate.

If its anything like surfing they will award the double as a perfect 10 wave ride for progression in the sport. I agrees Levi's wave would have been a better wave ride but they will want to promote progression so as the sport can grow into the next level.

Every time someone pulls something new in competition that has never been seen in competition they should be rewarded for it.
Helps the sport to grow.

Just my 2 cents

Spot on, except dan renalds impossible turn through the lip in Hawaii, arguably the best turn ever and gets a seven ...

Double forward instant ten has to be but then if the other wave ride was also perfect ten also.

KK needs to lay off the Redbull, he's getting very annoying and repetitive with his commentary

I pretty stoked this is being streamed. I have watched many streamed surf contests, and for me, the action is better and faster than watching surfing now. I think 4 man heats make it better all round for viewing. If only they were scoring jumps as well. I don't know how they would record that though. They would need at least 2 cameras going to get the action.

I reckon the things that could make it better is live scores for the riders, so they know what they need. I would love to see the pros go for broke with 2 minutes to go. But for the first wave sailing contest I seen streamed, I am not complaining at all.

On a completely side topic though, I wonder why they do not rerun the entire competition like they do in racing on all the other window days and aggregate the scores. I know they want the window for the best conditions, but when you have the case where its over, still firing, and with a week left, why not run a second round ? They don't do it in surfing, but then I reckon that's ok as they have 10-12 events. If they worried they won't get a whole another single + double elimination in, they could just say round 2 onwards is just single elimination. When there are only 3 counting wave events, I would like to see them squeeze in everything they can. Just my off topic thoughts.
