Was fortunate to have a friend with the original 9'-10' duck tail longboards. so much fun.. he was trying back loops on his..
i guess it depends on the wave and location to some extent. I found the more drawn out turns the longer boards fun but also was chasing something more snappy.. prob. Need both lol.

The answer is always both and the van to carry them.

Or moving somewhere with better conditions.

At what point do you have too much breathable air?

I thought I had to make a choice on selling an older ultrakode as the new ultrakode seems to suit me more. Today that "how many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man" song came into my head.
With a chuckle I decided as long as I've got rack space then the boards can keep coming.
I'll just pull out the fins and straps so I can store a few more. I like the idea of getting bored of a board and playing around with other shapes, picking a board to go to the beach with might be more like buying lollies (candy), "they all taste good but what am I hungry for today?"
Saying all that I'm trying to stay away from the windsurfing second hand websites.

I was thinking about this post when I was falling off plane in lulls on my freestyle wave board, while someone on a freerace board was flying around me. And I kept thinking, maybe a freerace board of my own would be good, or maybe even a real freestyle board, or...

Go the older model freestyle board. Cheap as chips. super light and plane super early. Pop a freestyle wave fin in the box and good to go..

I trawl the used gear pages, look at online shops. they come up from time to time..at least in Australia they are relatively affordable used because most people think they are too specific so there is a smaller market.

i had a 110lt 2012 starboard flare, vowed if I ever found a smaller version I'd buy it. found a 90lt 2014 version which is almost the same board and grabbed it. then a Patrick came up used. 100lt. grabbed that too.they are all full carbon and only 6.3-6.6kg. 10-13 years old now. The Patrick more recent but before the super short trend. starboard 2012-2017 had an amazing team and the board shapes I have found to be fantastic.

kinda feel like we are in another purple patch currently.

Two common statements heard at the beach:

1/ Never leave your toys at home (or the variant: no point leaving the required-toy at home just because you cant be bothered packing it, just so that you can sit on the beach complaining about leaving your toys at home).

2/ The guy with the most toys, wins.

Exactly that! Always bring all your gear to the beach. Ok, I've got too much gear, but at least bring small, medium, large board, and all sails that go with those boards. Then your foil if you're into that.

hmm.. but then you run the risk of analysis paralysis ... too many choices, what to sail, continual swapping and setting up gear
For me, 2 boards max/3 sails and deal with it

3.7/4.3/4.9 -> 98 L
5.5 -> 105 L
6.1 -> 114 L
6.7 -> 125 L

maybe I need to get a trailer!

reckon make a call and go..yesterday even though we had some wind we took the lt ..
the trailer has sups, surfboard and a windsurfer lt as well as wave/slalom and freestyle boards plus sails and hardware.

I like Phil's idea of matching sails to boards

lol. Me to a t. I went from, I only need one board and 3 sails to a trailer.. It's nice to mix it up. Each discipline offers something different.
Even when done at a weekend warrior level.

Unpacking the trailer last night I commented to my son that maybe we have to many boards and should sell a few.

He says, it's not we have to many, it's that they are so big.

I like it.

I picked up a Kona wave board with the step tail.
It was great in cross on and not very windy, used a 6.5m and compared to normal board, it had the float and sub planning speed to get through white water so easy. Further out planned and it truly feels like a shorter board.
Coming back in I was so amazed how well the onshore turns went but was reluctant to do a onshore frontside bottom turn with that long nose.
I see the newer versions is much shorter and should be a lot better but don't want to buy new - too expensive, need ankle recon and wing foiling has less stress on my ankle.

Good topic and classic quote with he has most toys

I have one of the Exocet step-tail WindSUPs, definitely gets me out on the smallest of days. Does the most hilarious impression of a carve gybe as the tail tries to sink but can't.

I've been keeping my eyes out for a second hand one. Currently using a Quatro glide 8' something sup with a rig. It's okay but I find I'm usually standing up near the mast foot rather than back in a windsurfing stance.
You got any video of your windsurfing it ? Have you tried SUPing on one as I'm sure in one of the promos they take it out for a paddle.
Coming back to the gear question, more varied gear = more chance to get out on the water. Issue for me is when the gear overlaps or is almost identical in its use or possibly the biggest problem having gear that you can only use rarely at your spot. I've got foiling gear but with the wind comes an evil shore break (it's not that big, it's just a pain with foiling gear). The foiling gear has been used about 10 times in 4 years. But the SUP gets to ride in the car all the way through summer. No waves to medium waves sup time, a bit of wind then windsup.

No videos or experience using a paddle, I'm trash at SUP and would probably just hack the delicate rails to bits but I'll try it someday. Videos would probably be embarrassing to review with tiny waves.
Definitely wants weight back to turn, I rarely use the back strap though.

Overlapping gear, no problem! I like it from a redundancy aspect. It's not easy to get a new replacement board in Australia when you break something, so having spares or alternatives in the same category is great.

I've got two identical wave boards, feels great when I don't have to worry about breaking one. Both purchased second hand, very cheap.

This is exactly what I do.. when I need something I get no say in the cost.. so I do some pre-emptive buying from time to time.

Or if it's a fantastic deal I'll grab it..also I don't pump prices when I sell.. whatever deal I got I pass on because I'm just keen to sell and move on.

P.s. seems I bought another slalom board.. this has to stop.

I see your point about backup. I've got a full set of retired sails and did have a board out of action for 3 weeks and had to use 10l less board during that time. So having an extra board would be common sense.
I've been talking myself out of gear over the last couple of weeks saying it was an overlap. Just such a friggen horder, can't help myself. See a board for sale do all the research, watch the videos, check out the old catalogs, and then at the end talk myself out of it.
Seen an old starboard ignite which I would love to try out freestyle on but at the moment talking myself out because I don't sail flat water....
Someone selling a 2025 4.7 x-over for cheap and I've already got an older 4.7 wave which is just fine but I'd love to see the difference. Too many choices, not enough storage, cash, and I think moving closer to the beach would help this addiction. I'm only 30 mins away and that is 15 mins too far.
