Dear me, new boy.....( tongue in cheek)
That forecast will change about 200 times between now and then.
I'll hang around, just in case though.
Nice surf out there this morning, big sets out wide, crystal water.
New board due Tuesday, so here's hoping.
Currumbin does manage to go off on a SE about two days a year, so that might be one of them.
Assuming this is not sarcasm, don't ask me, I'm hopeless at jagging the southerlies.
I can post what I measure on the beach, but that means little there, cos it might drop out 5 mins later.
Tuesday this week, I went down, measured steady 15kts at the waters edge, rigged up and went out, thinking this is gonna be great.
Plugged out through the shorebreak OK, which is always a bit dicey, cos if you cock it up, the rock is waiting, and the sweep is typically a bit lethal. I know this, cos I did cock it up once and smashed a rig up out there and getting sucked under the rock can be embarrassing too.
Anyway, got out back, and started planing, though, this is great, gybed, planed in, and that was it for the day. Spent another few runs plugging in and out, enjoying the wonderful water and swell, but felt lucky to jag a wave and scrape into the creek mouth.
It was a run-in tide, which I knew, otherwise I would have done the walk of shame from about Burleigh, I think.
If you watch the wind charts, you'll see it often blows briefly there on a SE. Very friggin' briefly !! It's basically squalls.
Northerlies, OTOH, settle in and crank nicely.
wow, 2 whole days a year. Guessed we are stuffed as I had 2 good days on the same weekend a couple of weeks back... oh and the week before as well. Oh well.
Currumbin will always be lighter than the northeren end of the coast in any south wind direction, just the way it is. So if Seabreeze is forecasting 20, it might be 15 at Currumbin. Same with BOM. Also if the Airport is measuring S/SE or S it will be very hit and miss, True SE always is the most reliable. Anything else gets killed by the rock and the hill so you are better off hitting D-bar - if you have thick skin and can handle a bit of abuse.
I have sailed Currumbin for about 25 years and do believe we get less days there now than we did say 15 years ago, but that does seem to be changing a little. The trees that are now on the sand and the increased height of the sand above the rock wall have also made the wind more flukey than it once was.
All said, I will have my fingers crossed for some action on Tuesday or Wednesday, work from home days FTW!!!
Don't be too literal, ol' mate.
I love Currumbin, but ya gotta admit, many SE days get promised, few deliver.
It don't confront me none !!
Jamie as a surfer as well I really dont think I would be so keen on a wavesailor cutting through, so Dbah would not be on my list, a bit like SUP boarders on my local break, not much love out there for you boys, sorry. Or clubbies on paddle boards.
So, where else on a good southerly, too onshore around mermaid I think, any thoughts?
If it blows as forecast on Tuesday, then Currumbin will be great. I'm keenly optimistic it will be one of those days.
We've just seen a lot of forecasts like this one a week out slowly fizzle and come to nothing on the day. Last year, it was every week for 3 months, with one stellar day and a lot of brides-maiding.
Shearwater should have the right tides on the afternoon next week. It's flat water/chop, but not a bad sail on a good southerly. It seems to funnel in there and it's a nice spot.
Currumbin will be OK tide wise through late morning etc. Back to neap tides, so the run should not be as bad as today, for example. Surfers being rescued at the Alley today, and getting hailed again when I was there for drifting too far out on the run-out conveyor.
DAre I say it yet, but the forecast seems to be weirdly improving.
Please let all my cynicism be severely punished with wind.
I will keep an eye on it might be to much of a similar temperature on land and ocean to get a sea breeze going but yest that through might drive a bit of wind also, clutching at straws..........sure monday late and defo Tuesday all day looking good
Looks like SSE so I am seriously thinking of making the effort to go to flat rock.Depends how it develops during the day. The Alley will be small anyway on Monday. Tuesday looks good.
just got back from camping weekend at Iluka, wind hit there last night at 3am! I was packing my site up at 3.30am, except for tent. The southerly just started to wind up and roar!
Looks like I beat it home, just started to blow here.
Fingers crossed, will knock off at 1pm.
Where will you go ?
I'm hoping Currumbin will happen.
I went there today, but it didn't really come in.
The ugly sister served up dinner though.
Went to Flatrock but didn't happen. Just upped my percentage chances of a good sail next time. Currumbin in the morn for me.
Maybe it was the new JP single thruster 99 who was selective about where she loses her virtue. Hopefully she will warm to the currumbin layout tomorrow.
I will check on coastalwatch at lunchtime, if it looks questionable at the alley Im going for an arvo date with the town bike, s sweet girl named Shearwater, at least I know Ill get my hand up her jumper!
Nice board. I used those lots in Maui at the JP launch.
I'll probably trade my FS on one next year.
Should be stellar at the Bin tomorrow, perfect for breaking her in.
