Hi Guys and Girls,

Bayside slalom racing is being held this Sunday. Due to the poor conditions for the season and the opportunity to get some good winds, the decision has been made to credit the results from this weekend towards the state titles, which you well know were postponed twice due to no wind events.

We understand that this is not an ideal situation, but it is more favourable than having a non-result for 2010.

There are a number of newcomers to the club - i encourage you all to come along and have a go. There are plenty of people around to help get you on the water and around the course - you never know you may do better than you think.

The start time is earlier, as we want to get some more races in.

Usually the south easter races are exciting and fast with bucket loads of carnage at the gybe marks - i promise to not be one of them some of the time. They are in my opinion the highlights of our season - so head on down on sunday.

Big call JC, these are YOUR conditions (i.e. green arrows galore). Better get the video recorder out and have a delayed start on the F1. Looks like the after party is at your place...

Good call though re the racing, with the wind having been so fickle this year you really had no choice but to take advantage of what we get.

Cant wait.

This is going to be an awesome day and I can't wait. Hopefully we can get everyone behind it and make it the most successful states yet. We have the wind, the organisation is second to none, all we need now is for everyone to pull out the stops and get there on the day. If you have a friend who is sitting on the bench then now is the time to twist their arm and get them involved.

Lets thank Bayside and their crew for all of their hard work over the years by making this one of the most patronised events they have run. This means all the Redcliffe, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Burrum Heads guys and the RQ team turning up as well. Even if you have never raced before there is no excuse. You will still be catered for as there are divisions for all abilities.

Lets JUST DO IT!!!!

The forecast is holding and looking the goods for a great southeaster slalom shootout.

Now murmurs are about if its too windy for my big board. It's simple use your freeride or bump and jump gear. More than likely most of the fleet will be doing the same thing except for the guys in the open division.

Now we have confirmed we are running 8 races in 2 groups of four, with the obligatory break in the middle for tea and bikkies and some friendly bantor.

Usual Barbie at the end.

We are starting a little earlier so registration opens at 10 am and we want this finalised by 11. Briefing will be 12-12.30 with first race at 1pm.

Look forward to seeing you all there

PS - someone drag JC's lazy old but down please.

Wow Guys and girls great effort.

Now the results are yet to be done, so this is a quick informal wrap up from today.

Firstly huge thanks to adele (spelling?? sorry brad - but we have to stop calling her brad's mum) and al for once again manning the boat and running the races in such a professional manner. These guys rock - mind you i would love to have seen that start line collision from where they were sitting.

Ken great work on the new club barbie.

Secondly, to all those who braved the conditions - super effort, particularly the new comers. What an initiation - you all survived, and by the size of the grins I'm hoping it was from a great day and not grimacing from pain. (that's tomorrow)

Using the peel island data the wind was around the 25 kt mark with some very intense gusts - especially at that outside mark. All manner of gear took to the water with the bulk of the race fleet running 6.3 to 7.0, and the smarter ones were on 4.5 and 5.0 wave sails - except tribey, who really wished he could play with the big boys today, but alas he had no toys.

My personal highlights
1. phil nott racing on a 50 wide speed board.
2. Dave M's fully lit air just before the jibe - Seriously, i was only thinking how can i keep my gear in the water, and he was jumping race gear!!!
3. Fyfee gong over the front right in front of me - i reckon he's having a bex and a good lay down as i type.

But by far, was the most extraordinary crash on the start-line of the first race - boards and rigs and bodies flying everywhere. Glad it wan't me. Who knows what happened? I heard that Leo snapped his mast across Brad's (man of steel) shoulder.

By far the most exciting racing i've had in a while - who said we don't run high wind slalom

Hope everyone pulls up OK. And look forward to catching you all at the next race.

Cheers

As I was leaving it looked as if the cops were going to give a fine to the guy with the start boat and trailer. If they did, I am happy to chip in to cover it.

Wow, what a great day of racing. Talk about being on the edge all day, that is not the sort of weather to be on a 75cm wide board. I think I popped a rib and I still can't remember how, there was certainly a popped foo foo valve whenever air got under the lip of the board.

Thanks again to the Bayside crew, fantastic event as usual and the sausages tasted awesome after that hammering, thanks for that Ken. Also a big thanks to Adel and Al in the start boat, its not comfortable sitting anchored on a day like today but they laid a magic course and allowed us all to have an absolute ball.

Fantastic turnup also with a number of new faces. Aweome all round.

Da Vecta,

Yes the boat did get fined, and thank you for the offer - but the club will cover it.

What sail were you??

How was the performance from a first timers view?

Eggs,

Welcome, it was nice to see a few new faces - i think we had six new comers to the ranks that have not raced with us before. I trust they all enjoyed the taste, and realised how challenging and fun racing can be.

I remember Matt Pritchard saying at the clinic one or two of the sailors were taping lead sheet to the nose of the board to help keep it down. I can see a nice carbon encrusted lead nose cone being top priority this week!!

It was agreat event,
my first 'Slalom race in 15 years' after a couple of attempts in the 90's that were no wind duds, only regret there wasnt another 4 race heat! I was just starting to get the hang of things, plus I'm a sad sick unit that likes pain and the idea of the last standing in battle!
Was a bugger the 'free ride' had the shorter course with a harder upwind angle to get back to and created some major traffic if you were hitting the first gybe at the same time the leaders were coming back from the far bouy!...shiiiiiiittttt!!! , sailed the long course afterwards and found it much easier plus there were nice chunky swells out there, great to gybe on!

Had a blood tranfusion from the 72ltrs of the red stuff I spilled due to 3,000 cuts in my feet...what a crap launch! But so much a better sailing spot than Golden Beach!, (i'm sure Brisbane bay gets WAY more wind and stronger wind and way less rain than the 'NonShineCoast' ...nice open clean wind no runing tide issues...but a Bootie sales business would of killed it!

Ive been mainly wave sailing and kiting the last ten years (sunny coast) but coming back to WS in strong winds (swapped wave for go fast gear) and really enjoying it, started the year at the ledge to lancelin and a slalom blast after the race with the No1 Man himself BJ Dunk! that was UNREAL!

The ledge to Lancelin and Sunday reminded me what WINDsurfing is all about...in conditions like we had its phyically and mentaly tough, fast, furious and exilerating, more so that a 20ft kite jump!

To me the sport lost its way in the 90's with too much tech focuss, which equals $$$, The gear has really settled down in recent years, with really little change from year to year, they have the recipe right , its just tweaking..(ironically Kiting has seen the same thing start to occur now)

I'm no fan of doors with giant fins and yacht size sails all that does is make the sport, expensive, cumbersome, and elitist, if there is no wind, then there is no wind, go SUP, Surf, Swim play tennis golf whatever!
Any event with lots of winds that doesnt require speciliast gear count me in!

I Love WINDsurfing (not gentle breeze surfing!) and want to see it get back to where it belongs, well done to the organisers , I can see a lot of work goes into it, great to see some youth on the water and ladies kickin A!, and I thought the boat/Flag crew were awesome.

Well done to all that survived! and thanks to the organisers.

It wasnt funny to see the boys in blue rushing to get their demerit point /income up just before 5.00pm knock off of Sunday, they couldn't write those tickets fast enough...sad waste of tax payers money!

I agree with Jonesy. I think if there's only one start the "two far end buoys" doesnt work so well...Thats alright. Know we know.

Can you believe it - parking fines. Must have been a slow day for the police to resort to parking fines. Mind you they are cheaper than what the council give - go figure.

Jonesy - very well said. Racing in conditions like that is hard to describe, but i'm still struggling to get the smile off my face. And yes the launch is tough and you have to tread lightly, but Manly is a great spot.
