Let's face it. Stop working for the man and start working for yourself (aka the man is your client). The benefit is once the wind is up you are "on assignment with another client".

I'd second that... I don't think I have seen a 2 bedder with a garage anywhere near the east in almost 10 years.

If you Google "rent 2 bedroom unit, lock up garage, Randwick" you'll find more than you can poke a stick at. Starts at $450/week.

Ahah, I'll try to explain that to my internship's supervisor!

Just realized I meant to say you'd be pushing it to find one with a garage for $450 a week.

Manly would be on my short list, great life style. You can launch from Little Manly like I do with some other windsurfers and have a great sail in Sydney Harbour .
Dee Why could be another option it has plenty of accommodation with many units to choose from.
Long Reef at your door step for a bit of wave sailing or you could drive to Botany Bay .

What areas is windsurfing banned on Sydney Harbour? Just the ferry routes?

yep, meant to stay off the ferry channels although the Maritime Authorities seem pretty relaxed about windsurfers cutting across as long as there's no ferry inbound. I've never seen them get agitated about it even when there's been a bunch of people out. Saying that the ferry skippers will let you know if they think you're taking liberties with right of way.....

I'm guessing things were potentially disastrous in the 80's when every man and his dog plodded around on a Wally at the hint of a light breeze. Now that most are a lot more skilled, and don't bother to go out unless there's enough wind to outrun the Manly ferry, it's probably a non issue anyway.

I wanted to thank you all guys again for your answers, it's really cool. My final choice will certainly be Bondi, at least in the beginning because it's quite near my work and would be more practical.

Anyway, I think I'll spend the first days in a youth hostel until I find the perfect roomate! As soon as I have a spot, I'll go buy my gear!

Concerning the gear: I was thinking about a 135L board (I used to ride that during my last session and think it will be great to begin, even if I aim at getting better and take a lighter one later!).

I rode a Fanatic Shark 135 and it was really great stuff, straps were really accessible and easy to put. This quite a polyvalent board, do you think it will be adapted to sydney?

Concerning the sail, I am 1m94 tall and weigh 85kg, so I tough a 5,7 or maybe 6 or maybe even 6,2 if the wind is often a bit low. What do you think (I know, you think the 3 of them, but still....)

I use my 6.2 and 7.0 for sea breezes all the time with a 120lt Fanatic Hawk. (90kg) (occasionally I wish I had a 5.7 or 5.8m)

Don't worry about water starting, you will be able to beach start anywhere in the bay!

Well I think I manage to do 3/4 of my water starts so it should be okay. Anyway, if the wind is too low to water-start, it's often quite hard to go planning..

Bonjour. What ever you do do your own research before you commit to a lease. I lived in Manly for the last 22 years and love it. I had a house one street back from the north end of the beach a 2 bedder wit front and back garden with a guarage and 3 off street parking spaces for $380 a week so you can find barging but do expect expensive rents every where in Sydney.
Good sailing flat water on Narrabeen lake, Inside palm beach or Long reef and newport for waves. Yes Botnay is better for the southerly but the suburbs surrounding it don't appeal to me at all. Others on here despise Manly "vive la difference".
Come here get a spot in a backpackers and try manly it has a great traveller community so you will fit right in.. In fact look me up when you get here and Ill hook you up with the local windsurfing crew.
If Manly proves to mot be to your liking try somewhere else.
