Well said Bruce.
I did the 1 hour at Burrum and Green. On Green it was like running a half marathon
Well I have never done a half marathon but my wife has, looks hard. ![]()
Sailing flat out for 1 hr is a real endurance thing for your body and equipment. If we are doing 1 hours I will need to get fit now
Shorter races are more skill based
I'm happy either way, I'm happy to just sail with mates
in line with Bruce's sentiment.
I also think that I will never win anything as I work every second weekend anyway and trying to get away on a weekend off with a young family is never easy, however the Sydney to Hobart race has a handicap as well as a line honours division for example. If Matt wanted to run a handicap so be it, but the winner should always be the one who covers the most distance in the 30 min. A handicap section would be a way some people may be able to see their name up the rankings in that division if nothing else. I did a one hour in the Qld series and it was interesting that in the choppy waters Jonesy nailed it using free ride gear that was easy to handle and keep a high average speed. I did enjoy last years season however, and if it was the same as last year that would be all good as well.
I have raced a lot of different classes of boats and they all have handicaps!
This does not take away from the scratch winner but adds to the people that are not as skilled, and encouraged them to get better!
It is its own competition to add to the scratch race and may encourage more people to compete!
To win handicap you still have to be at your best as the handicap is worked out on your best results which may hurt people that have got their best results in perfect conditions!
Hey Matt,
are you going to do some of the GPS/Slalom stuff? That would be good, its a change & that's as good as a holiday isn't it?
That is speaking as someone who's last hol was 3 days in Katoomba just after the snow fell.
Interesting discussion and points here guys, taking it all in Nth of the Border also, we are still in final stages of plans on season 3..so wont comment on what the results of those are just yet, but its good to see this healthy chat here, shows interest and some passion is alive!
The 'same guys' always win thing does come up also....and yep, what can you do about that? Not much really cause that's life! There is always one guy in the Gym that benches 50% more than you, and there is always one Guy (sorry to be sexist) that wins the Club best and Fairest each year...that's how it goes..mostly they excel because they train/practice harder and are more talented....life is not fair or equal, it wasn't designed to be.
However!
We have recognised the 'levels' and 'standards' are not the same so to encourage all levels, we have the 3 grades, it's worked well.
Race, Freerace, Novice...
The Race Board/Sail/Slalom board guys go in Race.
Novice is Newbies/Intermediates and Newbies, works well..the Novices have the easier option of 1/2 hour,
Freerace is really aimed for those on freerace boards and sails, as they do have a slight average speed disadvantage over dedicated race gear...but are conversely much more fun to sail, so there is a few races within the race, but everyone is on the water together. Their is as many windsurfers that sail freerace or freeride gear as dedicated GPS/RACE this is who we are trying to attract with this class and Newbies as much as possible.
1 hr is not hard once you have done it a few times, your sailing stamina and skills improves greatly when you push the time out, then you start looking at 2 hr times!
Wind limits pretty well discard any advantage in bigger gear as we try not to go unless its 15Knts + average..so our average sail size is normally in the 7's and 6's.
The overall aim is to get as many people on the water of all different levels sailing at the same time in the one event, whilst keeping it ultra simple and easy to run and organise, we also only run when the Wind Gods say its windy..no point setting a firm date and hoping for wind on that exact day....rarely works...so in the past we aim for the first windy Sunday of the Month, easy...except when there is no wind on Sunday, but there is on Sat!![]()
Overall we now have about an 80% +15knt success rate and out of that probably half of the events were in the 20+ range.
It's a constant work in progress and always looking at simple ways to improve...and probably the same as you guys , put together by a very small team of volunteers.
well said. Thanks for your insight much appreciated.
Interesting reading of the survey you did last year.
I sailed in the Botany session last year and had great fun!
One idea I had was to combine the 30min and 60min race with the same start time. If you feel comfortable after 30, keep going to complete the 60.
Do this 2 times in a day (wind permitting) should be relatively easy to organise, and only a little more effort for the admin team.
Hi all Matty D awesome Idea man.
I propose a comp with weight divisions HA HA HA I will be in XXXXL HA HA HA Windsurfing rules please Huey send some wind?
Love to see your there Frothie. As long as you don't try to shoulder charge the van again. (Don't want it dented). Got that new Carbon Art going yet?
