Don't buy a fin because it is cheap, buy it because it is the right fin for your board and your intended use and purpose. The fin is the most crucial part of performance and here you are wanting to compromise on that aspect because of price. Save your money until you can afford a fin that is right otherwise you are doing yourself and your board a disservice. Tribals and Black Project Type R's or the newer Sabre and Hammer GT's work very well in Falcon's.

Talk to Mark Jordan about Black Project fins. They're the only fin I use.... I love them. I replied earlier, but deleted my post when I realised you were after a weedy. Anyway, the RS is a top fin... has some nice tip flex, points upwind well, is slippery off the wind and produces heaps of lift so you can go one size smaller than usual. Great fin in chop. As for weedies, I imagine Black Project does a good one of those too. They're not too expensive, but like Andrew says, don't skimp on fins. You'll just end up with crap. Save a few bob and get a BP Weedie.

Main reason I was considering Makani was that I'm very happy with the 38cms one - goes upwind great and handles chop no spinout and they are my main criteria -control.Speed not that important as will be out in chop and less than 18kts wind. They are also cheap.Only worry is will it work in the slalom board.
Maybe check out black projects.

I've just got a black projects type r 40cm and it seems to have a very thick foil shape. It didn't seem to flex nor twist and therefore has little feel. I've only used it once but why are they so fat?

Hello Sue, Why pay retail? I have picked up many Black project fins on Seabreeze for around $100 second hand. The fin doesn't know it's second hand and they work just as well as new ones i have bought. You just have to wait for them to come up for sale, then pounce. Pounce quickly.

Thanks, it's actually not a weedy. But I'm using it in clear, deep choppy water. I see what you mean. Maybe the R might be better in flatter shallow water.

I'm a lightweight but like to feel secure re no spinout.

kisssshhhhh--ka--PARTY.....he was using a bkack project 40 degree at canton the other day......he came in and changed to the jp36 45 degree......
looking at his set up, same size board as me but he had the black project on and i had the ol krusty jp36.....my speeds were a bit better than his at canton plus he changed becuase of picking up to much weed
the bp 40degrees look great...but i dont think there another rake for canton and deep budgy
there is way more weed than the average sailor sails in at these spots....
for your 89l the jp wave weed 26 would be no probs...thick foil
i use it all the time in the 99l with a 7m speeds of about 36...
those fins you were looking at look alright as well...depending on rake...

BP is short for Black Project.

Size is only one aspect you need to consider. The other is rake. Rake varies between 40 deg and 50 deg. The more rake the less secure the fin feels, but the easier it sheds weed. It looks like you will need something closer to the 50 deg rake, eg the Black project 50 deg weed speed. I haven't used these fins, but other NSW sailors have (eg Sick em Rex). they will work with more speed, they are 42 rake at the base & gose to 45 dwn the fin.
flying objects weedy is 45 the whole length & cheap 2nd hand, I hav used that at budgie.
