Interested Individuals without a team: I am asking teams who are wiling to accept more team members to advertise the fact. Mandurah Mob currently has 7, we are more of a social team, with a few serious heads, so more members are welcome.

Conditions of Entry:

I think I will need everyone to sign a document saying they understand the risks of windurfing and will not make any claims for damages against the organisers. This will be posted soon.

Rules:

No limit to number of members per team.
No limit to teams per state.
The competition is teams vs teams based.
To qualify for a team session, at least two team members must have sailed that day and recorded results. Individual results alone, will not be counted towards a team session. Using only the best team nmembers to post a result is not in the spirit of the challenge.
Sessions will be defined as windsurfing sessions by team members on the same date, location can be diferent for different team members.

There will be 5 measurement categories.
2 sec peak;
5 x 10sec average;
1 hour;
Alpha Racing 500m;
Nautical Mile.

NB. If the data base allows there will also be an "Overall" category

Teams that don't supply a session score/time/result for a category in any month will be awarded the maximum points.

Measurement Definitions:

Each session to be recorded, will be the average score of the team for each category.
Average being the sum total divided by number of team members participating on that day.

Measurement Method:

Speeds recorded must be from using a recognised GPS and recognised software, as described by GPSSS site, NB The Rules Committee may define it's own rules for the purposes of this challenge.

Special Note:

Technical Advisers: Roo and Slowboat.

For those that don't know Roo, he has done deveopment work on the NAVi GPS. Slowboat is one of Australia's top GPSSS sailors and has extensive experience with multiple GPS systems.

In my opinion for the purposes of this competition the following GPS's are vaild, this list can be added to if approved by people people who are technologically knowlegeable in this area:

Sessions for the teams will be submitted by the team captain.
The Team Captain will collate team sessions and select the best team session for each month.
Session results will be supplied/recorded monthly.
These sessions will be collated each month , and a score awarded in each category from lowest to highest.
eg. if there are 16 teams in a given category that have submitted a time these will be awarded points according to rank ordering. from a 1 for best time/speed, to 16 for worst. This is done in each category, with the team having the lowest points for the month, being the leading team for the month.

NB> Due to the technical wizardry by ZENSOFT, it may now be possible to upload data on a daily basis, and the data base will automatically update itself, in a rank ordered fashion.

Scoring/Results:

Results will be posted on the internet website each month (See NB> above). (A month is enough of a period to give hopefully suitable condions for all, and one session per category per month is a way of avoiding data overload).
Winning team/s each month can have bragging rights for that month.
Verification of results, needs to be possible, therefore each team members session results needs to be available for scrutiny. (This may be requested at random, or all results need to be forwarded to event organiser at end of the month)
Monthly scores are summed (added) for the number of months the competition runs.
The team that has the lowest score in each category over the period of the challenge is proclaimed the winner and awarded the trophy.

An overall category (And Challenge Winner) is the team that has the lowest score across all 5 categories over the 8 months, and will be GPS Speed Team Challenge Winner/Champion.

Duration of competition:

First results for the month of May must be submitted by 7th of June 2007 (Note NB> above), as all team speeds need to be recorded within 7 days of the end of each month.

The competition runs till 31/12/07.

I don’t think this will work unless there are equal sailors in each team.
Another way is to take the average of the top 3 speeds in each division for the month.

So what do people think is the fairest way to work out how team speeds are calculated?

Average of all the sailors in a team works for me... if you want 20 people in your mob then that's your call. If you want to be a total speed freak then you're already on GPS-speedsailing or whatever that site is so really this is all about having an excuse to go sailing:

"But come on sweetie, all the other boys in the team are going sailing today, and if I don't go then our score doesn't count! Honeybunches? I'll buy you flowers, I promise?"

im keen for a point walter crew i got myself and one or mabye two of me mates my gps isnt computer compatible is trust enough or what i duno ill still be goin out so doesnt realy matter

This is a bit tricky I agree.

As I understand it the rule is:

1 - average of best two (minimum) sailor speeds, same day, can be different location, constitutes a session result for a particlar category

The benefits of this arrangement are that teams can record results on the maximum number of sailing days per month with a minimum number of sailors. I know my team (Swan River Mob) are all in full time 5 day per week employment and getting more than two on the water on any given front will be a stretch (we all know the best winter fronts all pass through Perth Monday through Friday between 9am and 5pm).

Some have suggested/implied that this rule might not be workable or may be inequitable and that the rule should require an average of 3 or 5 sailor speeds.

I believe that if we are to change the rule such that the average of the best 3 or 5 times were to constitute a team session on a particular category then this will disadvantage teams whose members are in full time 5 day per week employment. Dawn patrols and twilight interludes are OK but should not be the only way to participate!

Participation and the spirit of competition are the underpinning themes here - lets try it as Hardie has conceived first up before we go changing.

Each team's captain can post the speeds for their team on the WindWarrior need4speed database... with enough team based speeds registered, a separate Team Top 10 Table will appear

Not a stand alone detailed database like what is being planned and designed for the Speed Team Challenge, but a simple and easy to read list running within/alongside the need4speed listings

Just our way of throwing some support at the Speed Team Challenge as it develops...

Are we going to use the GPSSS rules regarding 2 second sampling on the GPS's.

5. GPS Track Setup ? 2 seconds
Interval: Track setup in GPS must be at 2 second interval. Distance: This setting is not allowed anymore because it can give too much variation in the track and we want to have one single setting so there can be no discussion about the speeds. AUTO: Never use the AUTO function or save a track in your GPS. This way you will loose valuable track data. WAAS: Also do not use the WAAS function. In some areas of the world this has caused problems with the tracks.

Any posted session that is based on a track that has been at AUTO setting, has too much variation and/or spikes can be discarded by a RTK. If you are not sure about a track then first contact your RTK before posting a session.
