As a long time ex windsurfer I would like to say Windsurfing is always going to rule in big waves.
The atraction of kiting is that you can rip up a small 3ft wave and still have massive fun which just doesnt work with a windsurfer.
The stance thing and strappless is a bit of a mindset problem. If you drive a two wheel drive on the beach you will get bogged and its not much fun, some kiters cant see beyond strapless and stance.
Its like saying only strapless windsurfing is legit because its closer to surfing, pathetic.
As long as kitesurfing doesnt set itself free and embrace that you could do massive freestyle combined with waveriding strapped and create a sport respected instead of constantly looking over the sholder to see what surfers are doing and trying to emulate that sport
Yeah it's disabled tow in surfing, because you're stuck with a kite, and as I said before I don't get it. While it's not my cup of tea they can do some pretty crazy dangles in freestyle kiting, why not try and emulate that off the lip down the line...landing back in the pocket, that would be impressive. It's the way windsurfing is being pushed in the waves and it's insane, all the freestyle kids bring their tricks to the waves, incredible to watch.
To be fair I think surfing is kind of stuck in the same mindest, some of the guys on the pro tour can do insane aerials these days but as an outsider it still seems frowned upon compared to classic style? Maybe it's because not everyone is that adapt at it but i'm sure everyone has seen Matt Meola's Innersection edit...imagine if that was comp surfing, hell yeah!
