I would just get a HUGE 20 m kite and be planing before I even get on the water!

No contest !

I would like to come and have a beer though! Just as long as its not that weak as p1ss 4XXX stuff !

i have windsurfed loads of times at wello with guys on very large kites and not one of them could go upwind, boost, or even really plane. it was more like about 7 knots before they were moving at speed.

so i don't reckon you've ever actually tried it.

it's good to have plans.

even if they can't be realised.

It gives you hope and something to aim for.

Back on topic I don't think it's realistic to expect anyone, at least on the East coast, to be able to achieve the levels these guys have in the time they did. Particularly freestyle. We just don't get enough time on the water. Most of the Freestyle pros probably get more time on the water in a month then we do in a year, i'd even go as far as 2 weeks. Then of course there work always getting in the way :(

It seems like Queenslanders should get up to a reasonable level. Half of them seem to be able to get out and sail anytime of the week and the other half have had great winds on the weekend. Some complain they need a break from it.

Meanwhile in Sydney all we get is wet weather. I have not been out for a sail in over a month. I would love to own a long board like a windsurfer OD as I don't mind sailing in light winds, I enjoy doing helicopter tacks and little tricks. However like many Sydneysiders I live in a unit and the longest board I can have is about 2.7 meters long. Anything longer is impractical.

I'm thinking about getting back into a teaching role in the school I work in. At least then I will get decent holidays, around 3 months of the year off.

As for the original question, it's got to be a matter of determination. Some sailors try new moves all the time, and are always hungry to make progress. Others (guilty) are satisfied with being able to blast around and maybe move their skills up a notch every year or two. You can improve a lot in short spurts (eg a trip to Maui) just as well as making slow progress sailing each weekend for years....

If you wanna sail like the guys in that vid, you can do it!! But do you really want to pay the dues to get there? Want 3 story high slabs of water dropped on your head on a regular basis?

Unfortunately, boards did get wider and wider, whereas kiteboards were getting smaller and smaller....much more fun in the surf.

get a life user, you don't even know what your talking about, even when your rambling on about kiteboards, "boards are getting smaller...Much more fun in the surf." what sort of rubbish is this, maybe 5 years ago, the average size of a strapped up surf board has gone from 5'5ft to everyone using boards around 6ft 6'2 and most people are running larger twin tips, might be shorter but are getting wider, i.e more surface area to plane on, so i think you need to get in touch with your own sport before you come in our forum and cause tention in our topics that have nothing to do with kiting or bagging it in any way..

p.s before you start going on about me not knowing about what i'm talking about, windsurfing is my No.1 sport, i work in the industry, i also kite sometimes during winterfor work reasons, the company i work for is one of the biggest kite brands in the world.
And before you start throwing challenges at people make sure you know that alot of guys reading your comments are very good sailors and some are even good kiters aswell. so wake up, your got nothing to offer..

Hahahaah

You are such a goose PC !

You can't read and have low comprehension skills!

Read my post again,I clearly wrote "kiteboards WERE getting smaller and smaller....much more fun in the surf."

Get it?? "were" getting smaller, not "are" I was talking about when I started kiting.
I actually started on a 6ft directional. Went to a 132 TT and now a 6' 2" surfboard.

You altered my wording to suit your tacky little critique.

Whatever.hahahahahah.

You have aligned yourself with the serious dudes

Whats with this "come in OUR Forum and cause tention(sic)"
Lol !

You are creating your own tenSion !
Some of you are SO sensitive

Dear User,

Kiteboards don't plane, they "edge", i.e. drag thru the water like a barge being towed by a tanker.

Planing is good.

Edging may be good too, but who cares when you can plane?

Consider this:

Just a couple of comments as well about kitesurfing or windsurfing on lakes :

1) you can go kiting in about 7 knots of wind providing you'll have a fairly big sail (20+ m2) and a kiteboard that is longer than usual. Reason is you need to build quite some speed to go forward at a reasonable pace and not just going stop and go with a short kiteboard.

2) 7 knots is the lowest planing limit with a Formula kit.

3) below 7 knots of wind, longboard windsurfing can be exciting and challenging providing you have the right high-performance gear to excell in those conditions (long and slender hull coupled with big 11 m2 sail).
Kitesurfing is a no go, however, mainly because it's extremely difficult to get the giant sail out of the water in say 5 knots wind. You'll need a helping boat to unstick and fly the sail again. And you'll drift anyway with the wind. A big kiteboard with positive floatation is of no help in that case.

Because I want to maximize my TOW from 1 to 40+ knots, windsurfing is plenty enough and up to that job so far.

Cheers !

JM

I'd rather have formula gear than a kite as at the end of a session I'm far more likely to still be alive. Also I could plane up and down wind at fairly steep angles to the wind.

lol..

that's gold!

and very very true.

even the onedesign which was the original you can outperform a kite in low wind and still do freestyle.
