What do you use for a low end 15- 20kts..( e.g - gusty and more 15 than 20kts)
For a top end 15 - 20kts ( more consistent and closer to 18 -20kts)
Quote your weight & board + sail size .
E.g for me - low end -64kgs/ board + 65 of weight / sail 6.6m
top end - board + 30 / sail 5m
I'm just trying to get an idea of what people usually use. It seems around here that they are using boards that aren't a lot more than their weight ( +20 to 40) with big sails.
I suppose you should also say what sort of conditions your sailing in - flat water, lake chop , etc

So how does that relate to your weight - e.g - board is + x of your weight? Also is that top end 15- 20 or bottom end.. Oh wait it's in WA so top end..

15 to 20 knots on the low end I'd use my Tabou Rocket 135L with a HSM Speed Demon 7.3m. On the high end more consistent winds I'd use my Rocket 105 and 6.6m Speed Demon or perhaps a 5.9m Loft 02. If I had a 120L board I'd use it but I don't.

The water state plays a major part too. If I had a decent 5.5m sail I'd probably want to use it in around 20 knots of wind with a smaller board.

I weigh around 80kgs.

flat water, low end, 5.6m wave sail + 101L freestyle board + 20cm fin. (S-1 + Starboard Flare)
flat water, top end, 5.3m wave sail + 101L freestyle board + 20cm fin. (S-1 + Starboard Flare)
waves, top end, 5.3m wave sail + 85L wave board + 17cm twin fins. (S-1 + Nude Chopper)

75kg.

Basically 100L freestyle board covers all my flat water sailing (5.6m -> 4.2m)... and the 85L waveboard covers all my wave sailing, thou I don't bother with waves unless I can be powered on the 5.3m.

From what I've seen on the lighter end of the scale in flat water, the freeriders will be on a sail 0.5-1.0m bigger, and a board with 10-20L more float. Once it gets towards solid 20kts, they tend to be on similar sized sails as I am, and most of the time they will switch down to 90ish L freestyle wave or wave boards.

The slalom/fast guys will generally always be on 1-2m bigger sail (7-7.8m), and maybe a 120L boards in the light winds. When it gets windier, they are still on 1-2m bigger sails (6.0-7.0m), but also tend to go to 90ish L boards. That said most of them are a fair bit heavier than me, so they hold down big sails in some pretty serious wind

I am 83kgs. It the wind is more towards the 20knt mark i might jump on the X-Fire 102 but if its smooth enough i would stay with the 122 and 7.8m. it is really managable. Mind you i use adjustable outhaul and sail upwind and deep off the wind. Adjustable outhauls will add massive wind range to your sails. On a new sail i find a downhaul setting that works and then add or decrease the sails power by outhaul. i strongly recomend usung adjustable outhauls they really work and are dead simple.

Slalom gear, 7.5 sail and 107 board. Weight, sometimes = volume but at the moment about -10kg
If it's mostly 15 knots I'd use an 8.5 on the same board.

Since I started to use heaps extra downhaul I sent some photos of my latest rigging to the previous owner of the sail and he says I've overdownhauled it and not enough outhaul..Cams weren't rotating properly.Now I don't know which way to go..

I'm pretty sure thats what he told me to use.
Maybe I should back it off a bit from the new really downhauled one and use the smaller weedfin. I might post the sail rigged here & get some general feedback.

71kg

On the lake, flat water, gusty 15-20kts, 5.3 wave sail, 100L freestyle board. I have a 5.9 but rarely use it as I can plane almost as early on the 5.3 on the FS board, particularly on the lake which is super flat. May use the 5.9 and the quad in the waves if it's marginal and want a touch more power for getting out through the break.

If it's a consistent 20kts say gusting to 22 or so I can run a 4.7 on the FS board on the lake, would use 5.3 if in the waves with 86L quad though.

Depending on what you are doing will massively influence your setup choice. When i'm on the lake i'm doing freestyle so I want to use the smallest sail possible as it's easier in tricks; obviously with this setup you aren't going to win any speed or pointing races. A slalom setup would be entirely different.

Last season before serious bottom delam on usual board:

Me - 75kg
Usual board - Fanatic Hawk 93L
Spare board - Mistral Flow v85 (85L)
Low end - 5.9 KA Koyote (biggest sail)
Top end - 5.3 or 5.9 Koyote depending on water state
(5.3 in ocean, 5.9 on flatter water in harbour)

Next season (bloody soon I hope!):

Hi Sue,

86KG

7.5m Severne NCX
131L Starboard Carve

I have a bit of a bad elbow due to an accident I had a couple of years back, so I steer clear of heavy cammed sails. NCX give heaps of power and is quite stable (like a cammed sail), but feels light and easy to lift over the head to water start with one hand.

At the top end I would still use the 6.5 NCX or simply dounhaul and outhaul some more than prescribed, although outhauling it too much will make the COE a little flakey.

16knts = 5.2m, 90l freestyle board
20knts = 4.7m, 90l freestyle board

easy!!!!!!

also you need a 16cm fin to go with that.

but I weigh 60kg :)

67kg.
low end would be 6.6 and 104L.
High end 5.5 and 78L freewave.

I have always thought it is my weight that makes it very hard to hold down a 104L board in chop. Fine in flat water with 5.5 and 104L but as soon as it is solid 15-20 knots the 78L is so much more fun.

100 kg/220 pds = heavyweight

low end has flatter water - AHD FF 160 liter/79cm with MS-2 8-oh - freerace 2 cams
higher end and water is choppier - Fanatic BEE LTD 124/63 with Gaastra Flow 3X 7-oh {old stuff}

more interestingly {for me}
10 to 15 knots is BIC Techno Formula with MauiSails TR-4 10-oh
get to go NO MATTER WHAT this way :-)

110L Firemove and an 8.6m Severne Turbo. Starts getting a little hairy at the 20kn mark but fantastic for sailing on a very gusty lake. Have a small weedy on it which keeps the board behaved in the bigger gusts. Sailed this combo more this season than any other sail/board combo combined. Not a bad thing though - I love blasting along with this setup Zen...

Freestyle on my 105L with a 5.7m @ 176 pounds.
If the wind drops too much to 15 knots, then I'd practice non-planing moves such as fast tacks, switch stance, etc.

If I was just cruising, I'd use at least the 7.5m, or rather an 8+.
