So is this going to impact sailing at Brighton-le-sands or Kurnell?

The airport extension changed all of those places, in various ways. It's probably hard to predict, even with the simulator, and they probably don't care. I vaguely remember reading that the current in there is circular, and is affected by every little new thing that gets added in its course.

My spot in the early 80s, Sanderingham beach (McMorelands, the sailing club, below Dolls Pt), disappeared at the time, simple as that. It didn't change: it was gone in a matter of months.

I think westerly sailing in the area (foreshore rd) will be deleted, the volume of marine traffic due to the new boat ramp/jetty the channel there between the run way and the new wharf will be more like a suicide run than anything else.

I'm sure there will be plenty of Meerkats to keep you company Sean. Not sure if anyone will be there for sailing though

The local paper has just published a piece on the boat ramp. Apparently there will be 50 car spaces and 130 spaces for trailers... I don't know if I have ever seen that many boats on Botany Bay.

At least it means convenient parking if we are allowed to sail in the area. From the picture shown you would think it would at least be good in a southerly and depending on the length of the groyne area it might not be bad for a westerly either.

I only hope that the area becomes a more family orientated area because of the scale of the boat ramp and the amenities block. It would be a shame to see people too afraid to use the amenities block because of some weirdos hanging around (no not kiters!).

They are starting work there in September and it is expected to be open by August next year. They also say some stuff about the 'full facilities being progressively available by March 2011'.

There is mention of showers so it might not be a bad place to sail in winter. I'm not sure how the included dog bowls and bike racks are going to help, but I guess other people can use the area too :)

Dropped in there yesterday and there is now a net across the sailing area. I suspect it is to do with management of debris during the construction. So forget about that spot for sailing.

I sent them an email asking if windsurfing was allowed in the area, and got back a reply just over a month ago:

"At the completion of the boat ramp my understanding is that current water activities will be able to continue. However you need to be aware that during construction, there maybe some limitations due to the reduction in beach frontage and the location of an offshore silt curtain .

We are currently developing a Q &A sheet to address boat ramp questions, which upon completion will be placed on the website.

The area you refer to will also include not only the new boat ramp facility, however there will be two lookouts at either of Foreshore Beach, with a pedestrian/cycle path. I am happy to send you our Project News which was released in June 2008 if you do not have a copy which will provide you some information on these works. "

They sent me the Project News PDF that they refer to above and it shows which areas of the beach are available for access during construction, and it seems that the silt curtain will be there until project completion which suggests March 2011.

Seems like there won't be any sailing there until 2011. I guess it's not all that bad news though, as it seems once they have finished, it would be a pretty good spot to sail. The silt curtain is meant to protect the seagrass, so once the stockpiles are removed from the beach, you would expect it goes as well.

I am hoping that with the new boat ramp, observation platforms, and the cycleway going past, it will be a bit more accessible and the parking has got to be better. With more people using this area, it is probably going to be safer too.

It might be windy but on any sunny, hot weekend every man, woman and child from SW Sydney descends on the bay. Its a nightmare getting a park and the traffic on the road is put in the shade by the water traffic. Powerboats, jetskis, kiters, windsurfers, swimmers.

MD I think JP747 was referrring to the actual conditions yesterday, based on windfinder. It sure felt windy where I am.

I guess it is a pretty popular place on summer weekends, and to get a park you need to get there early. If I lived in SW Sydney and it was a hot day I would probably drive to BB too. Kurnell is a bit quieter as most people don't want to drive that little bit further.

Of course Rockdale council are trying to build their mega monolith and a marina just to make it worse. On the other hand I saw some reference to a multi-storey car park they want to build further to the south. Maybe this will take some of the load off the parking around Kyeemagh.

If they could put a viewing platform further towards the shops, maybe the jetskiers would stay down there?

What does it matter anyway, Safety Bay is far better...

May I recommend Sanderingham and the St.George River club area?

Not that crowded, a nice little parking area, on-shore in the summer.

I still like to drive a little further and go Kurnell or Wanda though.

You're all welcome to come down to Lake Illawarra. It's usually more brown than blue, the weed is a problem & you have to be careful riding a formula board so it's not much deeper than 70cm (in places), but the locals are a friendly bunch (not Foreshore Drive kind of friendly) & there is plenty of parking.
AAAhhhh the serenity.....

bugger

Bugger that I'm going to WA or bugger that Safety Bay is in WA?

Yeah Safety Bay is a great place to go windsurfing but so is Botany Bay, the problem is the number of people who descend upon the place. We probably won't go to WA now. Too many uncertainties in the markets. I bought a 7.8 North Warp sail over there so there is less desire on my part to move there too.

I just hope that the changes to the Foreshore rd area lessen the water traffic through the Northern end of Kyeemah in the future. Maybe the jetski crew with the 20 cars per ski might move along.
Still, dreams are free and that's a very big ask.
