Great stuff Jess - keep it up!!!

I thought this deserved a topic of it's own.

No negative comments about the place of windsurfing in the Olympics on this thread please - it's on now and our girl is kicking ass!!!

Would you believe ch 7 actually broadcast some of the race!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The wind looked real light and there was a lot of pumping going on. Its a pity they didnt show the whole race.

Now one of the guys at work wants to come and have a go on my board once it gets a little warmer.

Lets hope that a little footage will encourage others to start sailing

Congrats on the finish Jessica

Jessica is doing well. Currently third overall behind China and Spain. Yin Jiang from China has won the first three races.

I haven't seen it. But what do they do? Is it a course they have to go around? Or is it like a straight line running race on water?
Pretty cool to have it in the olympics.

Not sure but I guess its a triangle course, an upwind leg, gybe around the top mark, downwind to the next mark, gybe around it and a reach to the finish.

Yes I did.

Windsurfing in the olympics is cosmic.
Racing in hardly any wind made me yawn.

Whether anybody reading this forum thinks it's boring or shouldn't be there is irrelevant, it is there and Australia's champion, Jessica Crisp, has a great chance of taking a medal.

The Olympic sailing is a regatta, and regatta-style windsurfing is the only type of windsurfing that can be included due to the format and the light wind conditions.

It is as relevant to windsurfing as any other aspect of the sport, probably more relevant to most punters than the extremes of the sport like speed sailing in the canal or double mast high Ho'okipa.

Whether or not it's exciting is not a criterion for it's inclusion. The sailors who are competing in Olympic windsurfing are elite athletes of great talent and dedication and the gold medallist will be as worthy a winner as that of any other sport.

I think, dont quote me on it, that there are two buoys (spelling lol) like a cigar course but instead of having it so the runs are baring on the wind, the two buoys are directly upwind and downwind of eachother. Makes it preety hard to navigate anyway. Thats what i think.

Let's hope the government takes notice and does a little bit more to promote windsurfing among the young 'uns!

Far too much emphasis is placed on lame-o, conventional team sports...no wonder the kids are bored!

Why play with balls when you can play with poles instead? Er...you know what I mean...

I just watched the skiffs and it was blowing an absolute gale! Looked really sketchy. AUS was in the lead by about 2 minutes and they capsized twice on the last leg! Boats capsizing everywhere.

Hahaha.

I tried this kind of course racing recently.

Couldn't understand the course, couldn't recognise the markers, didn't understand the signal flags, ended up sailing in a big "V" shape instead of a trapezoid with inner loop or whatever...and I was awarded fourth place out of 15 entrants!! Excellent work on the part of the referees!!

The following week there was another race. I didn't know we'd started, and waited at the start line through the whole thing. I was well pi$$ed-off when I found out the race was over!

It was then that I decided to retire from the racing circuit before I did any real damage, and focus on something I can handle, like sailing back and forth on a reach all day long.
