I have seen people attach the key safe to door handles, roof rack and even to their wheels, some people like to hide the key safe because if seen people will know you are the one on the water and break into your car. I attach mine to the tow bar cut outs but theres various options.

Be careful guys, if your car is like mine a simple keysafe may not shield the the key from the car.
If you have a push button, the engine may still start with the key in the safe.
Mine is worse than that, when the car senses the fob, all doors can be opened and car driven.
So the fob has to be electronically sealed in a faraday cage. It took me a bit of testing to make one that worked, it surprised me how much shielding it needed.
My Pajero key cost $14 last week at the shopping centre cobbler / key guy for a dumb key for just the doors.
Cost may vary for fancier cars? The Pajero key is pretty basic.
BMW wagon came with a small removable key which you could unclip from the fob.

I think so. But locksmith said need chip. I am doubting.
I've got a VW Caddy van and use one of these. It has a transponder/chip which is programmed to the ignition by the locksmith. The chip is in the red tab which slides into the key. It cost me about 60 UK pounds. I think it would be waterproof, but keep it in an aquasac under my wetsuit to be sure. I wouldnt use a locksafe as they can be broken into very easily, and it does happen (in the UK). Insurers might not pay out either.

Hi Swoosh, I searched and couldn't find cobbler. A few in different area. Logan is bit far from me.
Can I ask which one did you get your 14? Or I go to any key and shoes shop to try?

I thought attach the key safe on a closed bar of the black color fence, closed bar, so that they need to guess which car is even they find the key safe as below picture.

I just put it in my impact vest, standard new ranger key (the ones that only have a key inside for back up but you cant lock the car with that), the water proofing looks average but its still working after a year.
I miss my old car. Got a new one. Fancy with remote start all that clever stuff. Was a while before i noticed - no key hole on the door! There is an emergency key hole hidden on the door handle but you have to remove the door handle trim before you can get to the key hole! So I put the key in a zip lock bag then in a small waterproof case and take it with me, occasionally a little wet but hasn't damaged it.
I've been using this key pouch for a few years now, I put it around the neck and tuck it under the wetsuit at chest height. Works great.
I replace it once a year to prevent potential leaks due to aging.

Decrepit is correct, a Golf with push button start will unlock while the remote is in a metal combination surf lock. Being push button the thief could drive away. It didn't unlock when sitting on the rear bumper but I'm not prepared to risk it.

I leave the key in the ignition, and car unlocked, so don't have that problem.
Where I am you can leave the doors open and the key in the ignition and your car will still be there hours later.I used to hang it on the key loop inside my wetsuit (spare key wasn't electronic) but now I just leave it in the car

With my 2003 Elgrand, if you remove the battery from the remote fob the keyless entry/keyless start no longer works and you need to start the car with the mechanical key that is inside the fob.
I think most (all?) these systems need the fob to reply to a signal from the car, so without a battery it can do nothing, and they generally include a way to start the car if they fob battery is dead. On the Elgrands its easy, but I am not sure about Golfs.

My minivan has the remote start and proximity key. I use the trailer hitch safe to leave the key in it while sailing but I need to wrap the key in aluminum foil. You can check if that faraday cage (alu wrap) works with your key by simply wrapping your key and try to start the car or open it.
Most remotes have a removable Key, leave the remote in the car and lock from outside with Key.
As above. You do not want to lose an electronic key, they can cost a fortune to replace.

Above there were two people mentioned
water proof key bag. I finally took this idea. Because the bags( two brands products) are both 100mm?70mm. A bit big compared with what I imagined, like the key pocket size in wet suit. I found a kinda water proof bag at home. It is a 3 dollars discount one bought randomly before. Then I chucked my key in it, I don't have remote function. Thr bag is in three zip lock. I tied up in my hat, worked well for me today.
