By September the wind is pretty inconsistent. It can still be good but it is most likely to be pretty light...
There is a little bit of gear to hire - think a few starboards, and a couple of severne free ride rigs from memory.

Hi, I went their last year as i had a wedding in cairns. Toody was really helpful and had some nice freeride gear to use. If you know what your doing I am sure they will let you us it in more than 20 knots.

Despite my begging and pleading they wouldn't let me use their gear even though it was part of the package of being a guest at the resort. Said they weren't allowed to if the wind was over 20 knots. Unfortunately the wind was stronger than that the whole time I was there so no sailing for me. The prevailing wind is offshore so you can see their reasoning but it can be frustrating. There were a couple of locals sailing Green Island while I was there, using their own gear. I suggest you chat with the FNQ mob to see if you can borrow something from them if the wind exceeds 20 knots.

forgive my ignorance, but isnt Green Island and island ? surely one could walk to the other side where the wind will be prevailing in an onshore manner ?

True, but the rental is on the leeward side, and the locals mostly sail on the leeward side too. Maybe the reef is too shallow on the other side, or maybe they just like the flattest water.

Years ago the Island used to hire out windsurf gear then gave it away.

If you do come over, give us a heads up. If any wind Mad Cam is over there at least 2 days a week and I might drag myself over too. You can always share the luggage with your partner and bring your Favourite board, you'll only need boardies and t-shirts.

Now here's the go, stay somewhere cheap in town, backpackers etc and get a 2 week Green Island pass (don't have to be a local) for only $150. Think about it, bloody cheap windy winters holiday in Paradise

The Beach Hire on the island still does do Windsurfing lessons but only on 224 L Starboard Start board with 3.8 m sail, basically just for total beginners to have a go. That does get cancelled as soon as a strong wind warning is issued.

Toody does hire gear on the island but that is separate to Beach Hire and the resort so make sure you make arrangement's for that before visiting.
