Unfortunately I think its more relative to the poor state of affairs of freestyle windsurfing in australia more than anything... there are 12yo dutch kids who can kick my ass and they learn in a semi frozen pond.. whats happening?
You have just answered your own question... the lack of waves in most European spots (ie semi frozen pond) was the start of Freestyle.
Given the sheer abundance of wave sailing locations in OZ most people sooner or later get hooked to that and simply can't get enough. Then by the time they might start thinking about Freestyle because wave sailing bores them their body is so fcked up they simply can no longer do it.
After several torn ligaments in my foot and a knee that's starting to play up. I don't even bother thinking about any of that twisty twirly spinny freestyle stuff. Still it's great to watch.
But theres never any waves at gerroa!
Well 80% of the NErs it would be classified as a freestyle spot. And thats the premier wave spot on our coast.. WA is similar plenty of waves, but still plenty of days when the waves are gash..
My solution would be to combine the two.. give up on trying to wave sail Australia's abundance of tiny mastfoot high waves none stop and go off and try something new for 30% of your session, and when the waves are good, its obviously no brainer..
how many people have tried a stealth gybe? or a plaining boomerang? and when did everyone stop doing body drags??
