Panda, try the Outback in diesel if you dont mind changing gears. We found the CVT and petrol 4 in the Liberty noisey and gutless in comp. The 6 in the Liberty was ok, but really had to be revved to get the most out of it. In the Diesel, Port Macquarie to Coffs harbour in 6th gear with Cruise at 105klm, enough torque to stay in cruise without changing down even up hills (so long as there are no slow a$$es in the traffic). Uses bugger all diesel, so I get between 900-1050klm per 65L tank depending upon how much hwy I get.

Carries the same amount of gear as my Kluger, all sails and booms in the back. Boards on roof. No passengers, I slide the front seat back into sleep position and my 2 boards ride inside with me with room for another stacked in and a Sh1teload more sails then I normallt carry (4).

Eitherway though, if you go the Liberty or Outback, they arent pretty to look at from the front, although now after 3 months I am gradually warming to it

The Fav surf car I have owned to date is an orange (tech colour name was: Mellow Yellow) 1972 2L VW Kombi. Unfortuantely for the car, I used to live right on Palm Beach on the Goldy and the seabreeze ate it away over 6-7 years. Was expensive to keep on the road as it was always being repaired, but for a car of that age it used to get up and go quite well. Sultman's motors at Burleigh did their best to keep it going, but eventually I had to sell her off. Had racks built into the roof on the inside of the car so the boards, sails and masts were in the roof, and high enough in the roof that they were out of the drivers sight when looking in the rear view mirror - and a futon on the floor in the back. And yeah if I ever own an RS6 it would have to have some sort of exhaust valve etc so I could switch to straight pipes with the press of a button....just imagine...oooh

I don't think you need to, it may be standard feature. The RS4 I drove had a sports mode which opened up the exhaust when you gunned it. A number of the euro performance cars , eg. AMG merc, automatically open up the exhaust when you hit full throtle (wot)!

a personal favourite. -roof racks might render the ejector seat ineffective though.

For windsurfing gear any 6 cylinder "family" wagon will do the job and let it rust away without crying.

If you want acceleration forget cars, buy any large capacity sport motorycle, more bang for your buck. Sheesh for $5k you could buy a 20 year old Yammie FZR1000 and accelerate faster than most cars $100k and more could only dream off. For $10k+ you could buy a newer bike that can take you to 0kph-100kph in 3 seconds. Even my 30 year old Guzzi has better 80kph-120kph acceleration than most modern cars (just) and it's not even a sportsbike....she's a good old bus, love her to bits....qualifies for "classic" status now.

All these new V8's and Audi's etc. might be your dream car but hardly qualify as a "surf car", think some of you guys have chosen favourite cars, sure i would love a Lambo with roofracks, but it would be a pretty sh#t car for a surf car..don't think i would like to throw in surfboards, windsurfers or get into any of these wet and sandy..

Now a slightly pimped Herse or even a jacked up one with big ass tyres and 4x4would be more on the money, remember your not heading out to pick up chicks in it, just headin to some waves..

I'm 47, and still young enough to not need or want an "expensive' car.
I paid less for the TT than most new soccer-Mum mobiles, so it never really qualified as a mid-life crisis car anyway.
Happy with a van these days, happy as a clam. Cos it fits all my silly gear in just fine.
