Sandman45 good on ya for coming forward. I'm surprised and confused by the whole situation. Jamie is an experienced sailor and an easy going individual, I spent 4 weeks with him in Maui and he's a regular at our local spot in Sydney and I've never seen this sort of behaviour from him.

Apologies for my previous 'emotional' outburst, it was more directed at this type of behaviour. I'll shut up and get the story first hand, hope you guys can work it out.

the public notice is pretty much the article word for word. A bit of rather lazy journalism which is not uncommen in the Guardian.
They love it when a story falls into their lap, in this case someone paid them to print it!

This sort of practice in the waves has become commonplace here in Gero, and while most dont like to make an issue of it, if you dont it gets worse.
A common one is to jibe onto a wave upwind while not looking in your direction. Look over the shoulder after 30 seconds and glare at the "offender" down wind.

Wouldnt like to say who was the real perpetrator here, but mostly its a pretty good atmosphere around here, especially at Coros

It says something (yet again) about the quality of journalism that when we have two contradictory stories like this, one in a bunch of newspapers and one a first person account, that we easily dismiss the press report as sensation mongering lies.

The paper said he was a world class windsurfer [ never heard of him]. You would think he would know the rules of wavesailing?

I was sailing at Sunsets on the day in question. From memory there was only 4-6 guys out at the time of the incident. 5.3 with some nice waves. I too had a problem with (who I now know to be) Jamie. I will only state the facts as I saw them and the two problems I had.
I was coming down the line on a set wave watching a sailor coming out through the unbroken break down wind of me. He had room to sail over the wave and continue out, however to my dismay he proceeded to gybe onto the wave. I remember thinking "what the f###k is he doing ?" He caused me to straighten out / stall on the wave, then pinched up wind in front of me and continue to do so in the broken water.

A short time later I was again coming down the line on a set wave which I had picked up from the peak and Jamie sailed over the back onto the wave and upwind towards me. I turned up and around him to continue down the line as he continued to pinch upwind at the bottom of the wave and into the white water.

I felt he had put me and himself in a dangerous postion by doing both of these acts and showed a disregard for the rules of wave sailing.

I wish Jamie a speedy recovery.

Deano

I can only hope this is a case of Jamie having never learnt the basic rules of wavesailing, or an accident, rather than an act of aggression. I hope he gets well soon and plays it safer next time.

I suppose it's possible to have 23 years experience but not know some basic rules - right?

Ha ha, the media:
www.erowid.org/ask/ask.php?ID=3113

Interesting (for me anyway):
When I first read this thread I thought "Wow, people windsurf Sunset Beach!". Then I thought that it was pretty normal, well kinda, to run over a drop-in tourist in Hawaii. Excuse my geography. Then when I realised it was in WA my opinion completely changed. So my sense of justice and compassion towards other human beings chages based on their location. Hmmm.

Good on Sandman for correcting all without much fanfare.

... really bad news as he is a good mate of mine. I got a cryptic text from him saying he came home in crutches... no details of the accident.

[moderated]

... on a positive note... nice photo in the paper. I took that of Jamie a couple of years back down at Botany Bay in a SSW storm... I think it was about 10 degrees celcius that day and blowing 50 knts solid.

Locals in Gero. HA. HA
All were blow ins at one stage.
Localism is a virus water sports like windsurfing caught of surfing. There are no real windsurfing locals in any of the windsurfing breaks in Australia that deserve and more or less respect than anyone else. Normal wavesailing rules need to apply regardless of who is on the water.
Respect is something that should be given by everyone to everyone.
Amen.

... well let me tell you one thing... drop in or not if I would have been there who ever ran him over would have to make an appointment with a good orthodontist. As a matter of fact if I find out who the a..hole was I'll be paying them a visit next I am over in WA... and trust me that won't be just to have a bit of a chat...

When you bottom turn, often you can't see somebody downwind of you. That is why you shouldn't drop in!!!
Did you read any of the above thread.... pretty much everyone agrees Jamie was in the wrong, people who were THERE said he was in the wrong, and you come and make threats. Get over it.

if you can't see down the wave while you bottom turn I would say your bottom turning style is pretty non style...

... plus, if you can't see down the line how do you know how to line up for the next lip.

Okay, I agree you shouldn't drop in but sometimes you don't see other people plus some people take off so deep they never make the section anyway.

Go to Gnaraloo for example, there are people that bully each other so far south no one ever makes the section... which of course if fun for the "vultures" having around further North usually getting they fair share of great waves.

... Jamie's story according to the paper says he didn't drop in... Sandman45 who only posted a pre-paid mobile number and seems to have posted all of 2 posts on Seabreeze says there was no bad intention even so he supposedly "saw the other guy sail out towards the wave"...

You are right Stesegler. Do you believe the guy who claims to be a world class professional of 23 years experience (who I've never heard of) who goes straight to the media and puts pictures of him self "getting some air at a competition meet" and immediately puts a dollar value on the whole thing. Or do you believe the guy that has a go at defending himself because he's being slagged off by a heap of people that don't really know what happened.
Tough choice.

I was talking about at times during a bottom turn....... when you first start the turn the luff of your sail obstructs some of your view. If a guy gybes right then (downwind of you), you will not see him and probably hit him.
If you see somebody heading out downwind of you just as you initiate a bottom turn, you'd expect them to keep heading out, not gybe onto the wave right in that little blind spot..... the blind spot only exists for half a second but that is long enough for an idiot to drop in there and out themself in harm's way....

Forum users

I would again ask that people respect the rules of the forum especially in regard to threats and seek the facts before posting. The papers made the most of the accident that, was unintentional.

I am sorry about Jamie’s situation and injuries and wish him a speedy recovery. I would like to contact Jamie personally to express this if someone could private mail his contact details. Alternatively he can call the number I posted (which is not prepaid).

So what do you do if the person downwind doesn't make it over the wave because they are underpowered.

The reason I am saying this is unrelated to this incident. I have noticed this countless number of times in places like Gnaraloo were people start bottom turning in very similar situations while someone is trying to sail out over the break.

Anyway, after discovering so many other great spots on the WA coast I no longer rate Gerladton that highly anyway... hence usually like to go to places with no people around.

What a silly question. Going out has right of way.... if you are coming in on the best wave of the day and see a guy grovelling out downwidn of you, then you give up that wave ride to let him go out.
BUT if he is planing out and gybes onto that wave downwind of you he is in the wrong.
That is where the Ho'okipa style rules make sense: (1) going out has right of way but if you're planing out you cannot stuff up somebody elses wave ride by getting in his way or gybing onto his wave. IE going out has right of way but if you have a JUMP opportunity you give way to the rider coming in.

In my above post I'm talking about where you see a guy planing out so you make your drop and start a bottom turn, only to find he has gybed onto your wave right where you will make ur top turn.
If Jamie was grovelling out he would not have gybed onto the wave as it would not have peaked up downwind of Sandman yet.
Either way there is no reason to gybe onto a wave that already has somebody riding it. If you chicken gybe you do it 30m in front of the wave where the rider can see you. If planing out you keep going out as when you are just crossing the wave there is a second where the rider can't see you behind his luff panel.

That "second" is enough to cause problems if you don't follow the rules.

This appears to be a slightly different account of the event as reported in previous posts.

Boys were in a dog fight...Sandy got a bit closer than he thought.....more detergemand after spotting an intruder on his quite rightly so wave.

Sounds like Sandy was trying to give him a warning scare / charge and misjudged.

Whatever the circumstances this is BS bravado behaviour. A sailor (all up weight 80-90k) traveling at 20 knots is a lethal object. Someone could have easily been killed, all over a wave. That's just so dumb, irrespective of a rule being broken
.
Would you do this on the road...Someone cuts in front of you without using a blinker? So you charge at him to give him a scare and he happens to have to stop for whatever reason, bang..maybe someone dies. Dumb dumb dumb...
