Several beaches in WA's south-west have been closed this afternoon after a big shark was seen less than 20m from the shore.

A surfer reported seeing a large shark near Huzza's Surf Break in Cowaramup Bay at 3.10pm today.

As a safety precaution, the Augusta-Margaret River shire has closed the beach and several others nearby for 24 hours.

Heading down on Sunday... and as I am with the family was just hoping for a couple of quick sessions at the more popular spots...

Must admit to being a little uncomfortable with all the reports of Men in Grey suits - and yes, yes - I know that they are there all the time...

Yes, I've been surfing a remote beach on the South coast at Easter time when the Salmon are running. That is until the professional fishermen tell you what they see out there (10ft Tiger sharks lurking just behind the breakers).

Makes you think twice when you are a 30 min 4WD trip from anyone... quite unsettling and enough to make me come in despite perfect 4ft lefts and rights...

I preferred it when I didn't know what was out there!!!

Meh...personally it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Neither did I at your age... once you have a wife and kids; and/or you've been in hospital healing from a rather nasty accident it changes your outlook and you start to consider things more...

I think it has less to do with having a family and more to do with becoming an adult. Older people are generally more conservative in their approach because they know from experience certain situations result in undesired outcomes. its basic learned behaviour.... some people never learn.

Correct... although it took me four major cycling accidents that resulted in broken bones to realise how much it hurt and to slow my riding down!!

Someone once told me that the brain cannot remember pain - you remember it hurting etc - but the body forgets 'pain'... But I call B.S. as I can still remember the pain of that last stack in April - FN hand still aches (broke the little finger off the hand in 3 places).

there are signs up either end of smiths beach saying there is a whale carcass. we couldnt see one, and there was a nice bank in the middle of the bay on the weekend, so decided to go surfing.

Can get good in there in winter, too much sand in summer.

What's the bet a shark is sighted at Injinup between now and Sunday!

I was out at South Point on Monday morning, after the other fellow paddled in a fairly pointy fin appeared just northwest of where the sets were breaking, caught the next set in. Turns out I was bleeding quite badly from my foot where I sliced it on some barnacles

Definitely a few around down there at the moment,

I don't have a problem jumping in the water pretty much anytime but you wouldn't get me out there when there is or has been a whale carcas washed up recently.
That would be like burleying up for a day then going for a dip in your burley trail.
Only a matter of time before something is going to be sniffing around...
(Bank does look fun but)

+1 really bummed with this... I agree with both of you - that little right hander looks like fun - but not keen on mixing it with the whale burley!!!

Happened on three separate occasions and twice with Tiger Sharks. I've even had a whitey come within an arms reach of me and then decide he wasn't interested.
Yes, ofcourse it is a frightening moment, but I don't dwell on it at all afterwards and certainly don't get put off by it.

To be totally honest, it reassures my knowledge that they are rarely ever interested in us. The odds are stacked in my favour and that gives me reassurance.

I'm not trying be all macho; there are plenty of things in this world that scare me. Sharks just aint one of them.

Anyhoo, spoke to a guy at Secrets this morning who just got back from Margs. Personally saw two whiteys in one week, different ones too. Super sharky down there at the moment.

ha, when you actually see a whitey cruise past beneath you, I reckon you might think differently. It was the most scared I have ever been, and it changed my whole outlook. It looked like a submarine cruising past - dead still except for its forward momentum.

we checked the beach and no carcass, so unless it was just out floating around, but couldnt see it. dont know how long the sign has been there?

I wouldnt have gone out if there was a carcass on the beach or in the shallows, even if the surf was good.
