I'd post pics of my boards/shaper but I value my anonymity and it'd give me away. You internet-know him CMC, he's active on various forums.

I share some factory space with Dan. He makes all of my boards now, very open minded. Shapes everything from Stringerless epoxy carbon wraps and sandwich construction, PU performance to amazing Tint and polish retro's, eggs and Mals. I have a lot of respect for his ability to create whatever he imagines rather than what his material supplier allows him to.

Do I just internet know your shaper? I have nothing to hide although it probably has limited my ability to really say what I think at times so I have always used my real name.

Actually, he was on the Goldy for a couple of years apprenticing (although that's a bit of an insult. Technology apprenticing under the eccentric, difficult to deal with genius from over my way, maybe) with a "hot" big label then in pop-out land for a year or two and is now a one-man show in Vic. OK, you must know who I mean, enough hints.

Yep, can't imagine they'd work too well at Trigg point though eh?

Be amazing down South or up North. I had a beautiful AB 6'8 Swallow 6 Channel. Had to sell it one week short of cash. Also had a very nice Muzza 6'5 swallow 6 Channel, had another 6'3 Round tail 6 channel Quad Muzza that was very nice.

Wish I could keep all of the boards I've had. God I love 'em. Never gets old getting a new board, still sits in the loungeroom and try to get my missus as excited as I am about it. She's like "Chris, it's the same as the rest!"

Ive surfed it in beachies ect, as long as the waves are clean its all good

so even thou they sup, they know the ins and outs of short board surfing

personally been surfing for over thirty five years. i'm fit and flexible, probably way above the average person my age. in other words still very capable of holding my own on a short board.

its hard to take legion and doggie seriously when

a -they talk down to a lot of us like we wouldn't know or couldn't surf a short board. like we only started surfing when sups came out- all sup per are surfing idiots mentality

b they haven't given sups a decent fair go. not i had a go one time.

c how can you really give an informed opinion unless you do point b

d you don't like it that people don't see short boarding as the peak of surfing any more and that makes you feel uneasy, hence, attack is the best defence .

With daylight saving they are some what behind the times

Just to throw some acid on the fire here with the Mal argument.

Before I started to ride SUP I had a couple of different Mals, a highly rockered HP Brothers Neilsen 9'2 and a very beautiful Classic Mal full log Volane, trim lap pinlined amazing creation that Peter White shaped for me. I rode them quite a lot when the waves were small or average.

Once I got a SUP though I didn't ride them anymore. Not to offend but the Mals kind of provided no challenge. Easy to catch waves, stable, turn well etc and do everything they are meant to do. I found SUP very challenging. That year also there was a bank way out in the middle of the Alley that broke kind of randomly at 5 or so feet that was so much fun. Nobody was surfing it, too hard to read and better waves closer to the rock and at Laceys. You could take the bumpy drop and ride it to the sand. It was a new thing, I kind of got hooked on SUP on that one bank. Here I was surfing alone at the Gold Coasts most crowded break. (Note, very different now)

I sold both Mals, still regret the Classic Mal though.

In the last couple of days I have been riding a 9'1 Mal ex pro board, high performance I guess you'd say. It's great fun and I am a bit sore from a bit of training this week so absolutely perfect for the swell we have had. But in my very honest opinion it is not as high performance as my 8'11 SUP. It may have something to do with the ultra light weight of the SUP and being able to use the paddle but the SUP is way closer to riding a shortboard IMHO. Should probably note that this board is a local custom that is shaped by a shortboard shaper. I'm sure that will impress you all. I'm sure that if I spend more time on the Mal I will be able to achieve more but it was an interesting revelation for me comparing it to the SUP.

Over Summer I will probably ride the Mal a whole lot more, I end up paddling things so much for training that the last thing I want to do in the surf as well is hold a paddle.

Why not do it all.


I surf, SUP, Kite, fish, do the clubbie thing with my daughter and Sail (a mates boat ) I love it all.
I can get out in 1 foot onshore slop and have a ball.
I can get out in 6 foot glass and have a ball.
I can get out when its flat.
I can get out when its flat and windy.
I can get out when its flat windy and big swell.

Isn't getting out what its all about?

In 33 years of being on the water all over the world in a variety of craft the only people i hear moan are shortboarders.
They moan about boogers, they moan about goat boats and now they're moaning about SUP

Why is that am i missing something?

its called being insecure. and i find that those who whinge the most are usually pretty ****e at what they do...except whinge

So are you saying SUP is the peak of surfing? Or if not what is? Is the longboard or SUP world tour about to eclipse surfing? People have lost interest in surfing? Even my mother in law has heard of Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow. You reckon they'd know who _insert_name_of_some_SUPer_here_ is? Sorry, I can't name anyone, I just don't know any names.

I mean, I'm not particularly interested in the whole pro tour thing but surely even you SUPers have to concede that shortboarding is at the top of the ladder in popularity, money, following, performance, whatever metric you care to define.

Personally I'd prefer all waveriding to become super unpopular. Less people in the water, less people to share with, less people to have to chat friendlyly with.

Hey mate, I'll post honestly because this is short board forum. There's nothing good about the sup. Even if it is hard, it's still lame! I could paddle a chep pallet out into a crowded break and that would be hard to surf, yet I wouldn't expect a hero's reception. I'm simply responding to the'sup is harder to ride than mal so it deserves more respect' part. Other than that it's a good solid post.

Legion I normally laugh at your posts and also agree with what your saying,however not on this one,ride what suites the conditions.

Nothing worse than an aggro shortboarder pumping sh-t on a gutless wave,nothing worse than a greedy sup'er stealing all the waves ( don't see too many when its over 2 foot )

Who really gives a sh-t,ride them all and enjoy the ride.
