Ok - so I'm nearly 45yo, 110kg on a good week and of reasonable to good fitness (but it's fair to say it's been a long time since I can claim a 6-pack!)

I currently ride a 7'3" 7S SuperFish XL (poly) and I'm pretty happy with it.

I ride mostly 1-4ft beachies, mostly metro and Lano, with the odd trip down south...

Looking to treat myself to a new board and have been looking at a few 'big boys' SB's - but when I look at the volume stats, most fall well short of the 53l of the above - and I don't want to loose too much of the paddling benefit - seeing as I have to compete with 45kg 16yo's fuelled up on Mother and Mars bars!!

What are you bigger boys riding?? And would a shift to epoxy really make that much difference (never ridden an epoxy).

Cheers - GPA

6'6" Webber Fatburner epoxy for beaches.

6'10" Rusty pintail not sure what type for bigger suckier waves.

I'm 108kg.

Both are easy to paddle.

A number of the Firewire boards cater to the bigger bloke. You might consider the Addvance which even at 6'6" comes in at 48 litres. I haven't ridden one but I've heard they go alright, particularly in the conditions you're riding in.

How about going custom made?
And go thicker without suffering loss of length, pick the right rail & pump up the volume

Yeah - I won't discount custom, but wanted to see what off the rack boards are being ridden, then it's easy to do some volume and thickness stat comparisons - also interested to know the weight of the surfer...

I believe 7S are coming out with some new Fish models... any news P Co ??

I am 108kg and I ride a S.Anderson Mollusc robo - 7'2 x 3 x 21.5 - beautiful board, heaps of float, have no problem paddling and turning it. I had the dimensions tweaked for me to suit my weight. the boys at Base have make good boards.

Thanks Dave - might just do that - you've done two customs for me before - both were great, but one was one of my all time fav boards...

Should add that I am very focused on getting another Fishy quad... love the speed and the hold...

Thanks P co - I'm very interested to see what they have tweaked... doesn't seem to be anything new on the GSI 7S web page - I'm guessing you might have some dealer info...

This is one of the new colour schemes, pigmented and tinted. Same sizes as last year but with more nose and tail flip, different tail shape, more defined step and flyers and upgraded glassing on the deck and tail.
Looking good.

6'6 x 21 1/2 x 2 1/2 Single fin egg
7'0 x 21 x 2 3/8 Shortie

I'm 34 and go about 105kgs on a good day. All my boards are custom, I couldn't find anything of the rack that suited me at the time. The only thing that came close was the Merrick Black Beauty it seems to have heaps of volume but apparently doesn't go to good in the slop....Mctavish do a nice line of short boards (check the Sumo) not cheap but super well made, the Firewire Sweet Potato also looks good either of these will allow you to dial the length in a bit without losing any paddle power

6'2 merrick red beauty. (6'2 x 19 x 2 1/2)
It's got heaps on volume and a perfect ripper for metro beachies. I'm 95kgs and it floats me fine.

I think they do em in 6'4 and 6'6. It was pretty expeno, but my thery is the more ya surf the less it costs!

Dude, have a chat to a shaper. I got Steve Del Rosso to make me a custom after 20 plus years out of the water. Couldn't have got a better board, told him my age, weight and ability. Got a 6'8 traditional thruster and i love it. Same price as one off the shelf too.

Hey mate,

I'm 6'5 & 125kgs and I spent ages looking for a similar board. I was chasing something that I could surf in Perth waves and a little bigger if down south. I bought a Channel Island Pod 6'10-22-3 and it's perfect. Heaps of paddle but still surfs nice, I was riding a 7S fish before and I much prefer the CI Pod.

Good luck!

I agree - that colour scheme actually puts me off... that tint part just looks stupid. Hopefully there will be other options in the range - including a 'blank'...

I know this is an old argument but why buy an overseas popout when there are so many good shapers here in Perth (and over East for that matter). my local ding guy has a rack full of 7S 'fishes' to repair. Glass jobs aren't great.
Buy local

Well... the reason I got my 7S was because it was so radically different from any other board I had surfed or even seen (3yrs ago before big boy fishes were common) and I wanted to try something different. As far as the glass goes it has been good - not one fracture...just a couple of impact pressure dings that any poly board would get. Far better than my GSI SLX McTavish

And yes - I'm still considering a custom from a local shaper... just doing my homework on what's out there.

Cheers...

Fair enough. it is good to do the research. The way I look at it is that I would rather have a board made to my specs and chat to the bloke who is shaping it. that's just a personal preference . I have never ridden a 7S so I guess I cant speak to their performance in the ocean. I do know, however, that at my weight, I need a lot of foam under the chest. I guess with a custom board you can tailor the foam distribution to your weight and choose the kind of rails you want etc.
good luck in your search.

Really depends on your general fitness and where you intend to surf... but in general terms, the best 'bang-for-buck' new buy would be the NSP range - something over 7'2" - maybe a 7'6" in a 'fun board' shape... check their webpage out. They should have a weight guide...

Otherwise try some of the shops to see what secondhand longboards they have. If you don't know enough about boards best you take someone who does...

Good Luck.
