I reckon as time goes by the toll will be paid by all those who've been riding low volumed shortboards that have made surfers paddling them arch their backs excessively and crane their necks. The hyperextension can lead to shoulder and neck problems.
Talking to a local chiropractor about this and he said he has a large number of surfer clients with shoulder/neck issues.
I find to minimise my shoulder problems I tend to ride longer boards to allow me to keep my chest down when paddling which really helps.
Of course if you're riding a longboard and your shoulders are giving you grief its maybe too late.

Surfing in Hawaii i noticed this guy, who knows he looked about 60 but sounded like he was 80 anyway he would belly board these huge waves and rip up and down, paddling back out and do it again. One time whilst struggling to breathe and paddle this guy caught up to me and we sat for a moment whilst i got my breathe back. I asked he why he laid down He replied in the oldest voice you can imagine, "Oh sonny, I'm way to old to stand up these days" A huge grin and of he paddled off leaving me dead in the water

I guess its what ever it takes to get the stoke..

What the hell JBShack, there isn't anything wrong with looking "about 60",
the problem arises when you start acting like you are "about 60".

ET.

IM only guessing at his age. He seemed much older in his voice. Im serous when i say maybe 80 ish.. But he seemed much fitter thats what i was getting at

I turn 60 in June. My old man turns 90 later in the year and he still acts young. He keeps telling me, "You're only as old, as the woman you feel", mum's 6 years younger than him. Ha ha.
I've got it worked out, "Age Disgracefully".

Haha sorry no age discrimination from me. My point was this guy was maybe 80, looked 60 but was doing what he could/had to do to get the feeling that only surfer knows..

I turned 60 last July and made sure I took three surf trips last year. All were local and/or NSW north coast but still enjoy the ease and stoke of surfing away from home.

Just love The Pass, Double Island Point, Sandon River, Angourie Back Beach etc etc.

Only issue is i still work so have to slot a session in when i can get it.

Cheers.

Ill throw my 2 bobs worth in too...SUP has helped strengthen my knee and allowed me to get back on all my boards, short and long. I've had 12 operations on my left knee starting from 19 years of age with the last one nearly 4 years ago. I would recover well but then the knee would give way again leaving me out of the water for many years. I picked up a SUP nearly 3 years ago and since then my knee has never been better. I'm now in the water 3-4 times a week on several different boards and loving it!!...My mate is a physio and he said that hes seen similar results from patients that spend a lot of time on boats, the slight movements to keep balance strengthen so many muscles, tendons and ligaments in ankles and knees. SO in short SUP certainly saved my surfing life, and ive never felt better

I have a bulged disk in my lower neck and have had two shoulder reconstructions one of which still isn't 100% but due to the amount of damage I did it's not surprising. The best thing I've done is proper exercise in a good gym with a good trainer and it's taken a year and a half to get to the stage where I'm staring to get some good muscle balance and strength back I have a feeling I may be a little young than the person your speaking of but that's what worked for me.

What about a knee board?
