my personal view is that boards that claim to do both are lying to u. Ted i think you said it all in your opening sentenence, "nice and heavy like a traditional log" and a nose rider. if you are wanting the 'glide' then heavy is ur only option also. I have riden heaps of boards over 10 ft and lets just say the lighter ones seem to push alot of water rather than glide, i believe due to the fact they dont have the weight to really sit above the water and glide, you glass something light it will sink a little and push water. For example that 11'11 deadkooks i got is a bad bad water pusher so far, maybe i havnt figured it out yet, but it doesnt have the glide like my other boards.

i would do a 8x6 on the deck and a 8 on the bottom. Thats what billy glasses all LOG type boards as standard. If you want that bit extra go 2x6 on the bottom or put a deck patch in.

if your worried about turning make it a pin tail and use a standard greenough type fin to start. There is no denying these boards require a little more weight on the back leg and concentration to make them turn, but there not designed to rip and tear. they are cruisers for those 2ft days as you say.

please dont be one of those dudes that try to make a 10ft'er that can turn on a dime, nose ride, and a cruiser. they dont exsist.

go heavy, im guessing u have never had a heavy board so atleast try it once, promise you wont be disappointed

I agree I haven,t been on that many logs but have surfed my race board heaps. Now my hot log will turn some but it,s work and the best way is to work the diagonals with your feet. It does not turn on a dime at all. And I don't want it too

But hey if you set it up right you can turn any board

Cheers PS I accidentally hit the mark and cannot get rid off it. What's the go with that doh

Agreed dude, when I say turn I mean not wacking the lip off a done but still a decent drop knee cutty. I had this sweet old 10' log that I surfed a few times years back, sweet trim, fast paddle and super stable but mann, you needed a hand rudder to steer the bitch, was just too hard so I sold it... But now I'm itching to get back on a log, so its balance and what works for you

Ok fellas well after lots of consideration, talking to others, looking at 20 different boards, surfing 3 of them, input from the mighty greenroom and lots of swaylocks reading the board is beginning to take some shape. Will need to spend a bit more time finishing up a few scuff marks etc but she is almost ready to go now after a solid afternoon in the shed. It looks like I have some spare time this next week so I might be able to glass her this week if all goes well.

She is 10 * 23.5 * 3 and some I reckon (do not have an accurate measure for the width) and has pretty straight rails.

In the end I have gone old school style for pure nose riding and BS you will be pleased to know she will be glassed accordingly. She has an old school rolled bottom with 50 / 50 easy rails and a nice square tail (on reflection the thing I would change if doing again would be to make the tail bit wider). I have put a nice bit of concave under the nose that runs back about 28 inches in total. It has pretty flat entry into the concave then essentially a flat bottom all the way through the middle and rolled in the rails. You can see that in the picture below. I have put what looks like a decent amount of tail lift in the last 10-12 inches or so but have kept a bit of thickness so she will still paddle easy onto waves. Starting to get a bit excited now. Think there will be an upcoming trip to Crescent / PP for the christening. I can honesty say that its a lot harder trying to shape a long long board like this than a shortie - especially trying to get the rails right / even / symmetrical. Nightmare. I am definitely in need of some technique !

Thanks fellas. The photo definitely makes it look bigger than it really is. In fact its nowhere near as big as it looks. It will definitely get rounded off a little bit - but I have been seeing lots of logs with more pronounced wide tails in recent times. I think its going to be a bitch to turn - will require me to learn to drop knee. Should be fun.

As for the toys in the rack Mac - they are not all mine !

1. Board has been restored for me - just needs to be sanded back and it will be a wall hanging
2 & 3 - restoring these for a mate
4 Beer Garden Board - soon off to another home
5 The ladies 666

I need to make some room for the new ones on the way

Ted,

Looks amazing, nothing like a 10 ft log to get the twinkle toes happening.

After the last LB you made I am really looking forward to this one.

Maybe next you could make your fave.. A mini mal....

I am thinking of going with the sapphire blue tint I have - do a fairly dark batch will attempt the panel suggestion that Big Spazz posted - I like that idea. Not sure how it will turn out. Glassing is not really a good skill of mine at present - I have a lot to still learn I find the glassing / sanding side of it 100 times harder than the shaping - which is very easy to stuff up

Well to be honest no firm plans as of yet - will depend on lots of things coming together - I will probably just decide the night before if the conditions look good and hit the road. Probably get within 90 mins of you on the south side. Will let ya know and you can come down and meet us for a wave or 10

Just preping for glassing now - hoping to do the first side this arvo. I am getting a hand with the glassing from a seasoned pro as I am a bit terrified of doing a 10 footer by myself in these cold temps. Will need a fairly hot mix for it to go off properly and I do not want to get caught out. Will try n grab some pics later if possible.

No more pics unfortunately - that one was just a teaser More to come later in the week when I flip her over and do the top - ran out of time this arvo.

Climber - she will have a 10 inch box in her - on short boards you glass over the fin systems and then sand them back but on long board stye boxes you glass the board first then get the router out and make a hole, glass it in and sand her back.

The blue tint actually looks much better in real life than that low res pic with the iPhone 4 that Scotty loves so much
