The Daly Cherry-Evans saga? There are those who can bitterly criticise him for reneging on a deal, on backing out of a commitment. It is just that I am not convinced that Gold Coast CEO Graham Annesley – as likeable a bloke as he is – should be one of them.
"You'd like to think," Graham said to the media when the news broke, "when someone makes a commitment that they honour that commitment."
A reader, however points out that Annesley made his own commitment to the people of the electorate of Miranda, two elections ago, in 2011, and Annesley even made it all the way to being a Cabinet Minister in the NSW Government. That, surely, was an honourable commitment to your electorate, and to the Liberal Party, that you'd see out the term? And yet, when in August 2013 the Gold Coast Titans themselves came along with a better job offer, to be CEO of their club, the next thing heard was the squealing of rubber tyres on Macquarie Street, as you caught the first taxi to the airport and the first flight to Coolangatta! This caused a massively expensive and inconvenient byelection – the public record shows it to have cost the taxpayers $350,647 – and a 26 point swing against your Libs, with a new ALP member, Barry Collier taking over.
No one expects anything from a poly ted.
