NICK, OLD FRIEND, SORT THIS OUT
Dear my friend, Nick Pappas,Hope you are traveling well. Nick, I know you to be a very good man, who has done more than any one to, first ensure Souths survival, and then guide them to their position as the pre-eminent force in rugby league as we speak.I also know your view, because you've told me, that it is not for you to tell your coach Michael Maguire how to run the football team. But Nick, you now need to step in. While your football team is the benchmark for good, your team's approach to concussion is a benchmark for bad.Last year, your mob played in, and won, the grand final. Kyle Turner, who with a history of concussions going back to when he was 11, had suffered six concussions in 2014, including one in the last match before the GF, against the Roosters. In the deicder, both Burgess brothers, as we have discussed, were knocked motherless. Sam didn't come off and George returned after passing a concussion test.Maguire reportedly sent a message out to Sam Burgess to "Think of Sattler . . ." as in, take inspiration from Sattler famously ignoring his broken jaw, and prioritise the winning of this football game for the next 80 minutes over your mental health for the rest of your life. Two weeks ago you had Adam Reynolds knocked stupid, so clearly concussed it defies belief anyone could call it differently, coming back on to play. And now footage emerges of the same player being "revived," from concussion two years ago with – wait for it – smelling salts! Nick, please! Freaking smelling salts? The solution of choice, from last century, for punchy boxers? What the hell is that, if not an acknowledgement by your staff that the bloke is concussed, and yet still being sent back out there? You are a lawyer, and a good one. Your club's legal exposure if/when Reynolds develops problems years from now is staggering.Your club's moral exposure is right now. You and your board have to step in, now, and change this culture.
Can't disagree with that.
