Take what you can from here Teacake, you will find there is a select group here who like to hijack every thread on the forum, you will get the drift pretty quick.

For mine, I'm no where near getting a 10, 5's yep but every advance Ive made its been watching video and trying to replicate it.

SP puts up some ripper vids so watch and learn there.

From what Ive read the comps back in the day considered a noseride if you were in the front 18" of the board, if you look at a lot old vids they had a resin colour change about that mark. Good luck.

Ah ok, never really looked into how they score in comps to be honest, just went and did my thing. I will have a look at some more videos, had a good look at Joel Tudors Duct Tape thingy in Noosa the other day, that was amazing!

10s are so hard!

Thanks for posting the vid Teacake - looking forward to the next one. For a moment whilst watching it I had 2 thoughts....1. you have no lefts down yr way or 2 you hate going left .....but at last I saw a left !! What size shortie are you riding ? It looked a little sluggish at times. Some nice style you have there with those swooping top turns back towards the white water - quality. Keep those up.

By left I will assume you mean right The reason for very few rights is that I only have my brother filming for me when he is not surfing so most of the time we don't film at all. To be honest, this footage isn't of my best surfs at all or when I am surfing my best which I was a bit skeptical about including it in the first place. I ended up including it as I didn't have any other footage to make a long enough video.

As for hating going right, I love it! But we surf predominately surf lefts down here but there are some great right handers, the Hobart Points are an example although I don't get down there, the lefts break more often though. At the moment, I am surfing better going right than I am going left as I was away in Samoa surfing mainly rights for a while, best place ever!

The I would agree with your observation of the sluggish shorty (the red one), it is 5'8 by 19 1/2 and 2 3/8 thick. Wide tail and bogs down easily but is fast and good is fat waves, just not too good on the roundhouse. As for the other one that is 'swooping' up to the top turn that is 6'2 by 19 by 2 3/8, super fast though!

Still trying to get more vert coming back into the white water and really snap off the top there, next swell and I will be onto it! No more exams and the 300-600m river mouths set to be breaking on Monday! Will post photos if I am to go down for them!

No, there are none for longboarding, or that I know of. The other boys from this coast are the best in the state and go to surf camps and all that jazz, I never bothered. Always to busy being a nerd, studying away. But, maybe next year I will attend these camps. Had plenty of offers to, just never bothered, money, transport and time were always issues.

sorry yes it was rights not lefts !!!! I spent most of my early yrs surfing lefts and my backhand was always better than my forehand until recently. Where did you surf in Samoa? I stayed on the south coast and spent the whole time surfing little Teu'po as there was pretty much next to no swell. Some unreal setups there for sure. Would love to surf Coconuts and a few other spots but it will be a while as a few other spots to visit first.

Surfed everywhere mate. Both islands. Whackas, Devils Island, Tuffa Tuffa, Salani Right, Aganoa right and left just to name a few. Our mate over there is the CEO of the ANZ bank in Samoa and has been a great family friend for years so he took us around the place and took us to all the neat little spots.

Well over fifty and he stills surfs better than the best of us teens down here! A single wave of his was take off, big long tube, come out, big roundy with a huge snap off the white wash, maybe a 360, a few more turns. It was ridiculous!

He was saying the guys at Coconuts resort never take the guests anywhere other than Whackas which is a shame. First day surfing there was good but crowded as for such a place. But was a great trip aside from surfing!

Wouldn't mind going back and try to get a job engineering.

Also, in relation to my original question, a longer legrope would help for hang tens as well! I did know this but just saw it in an old video of mine. Still, tried without a legrope, still so hard!

Hey Tom u have to make up your mind if u want to compete in open divisions or logger divisions, if you want to do opens then u need to go to your shaper and tell him wat u want to do he will know best but remember this division requires full on performance just like ur short board but still throw in some fives and tens and this can be done on a hp board made just for you. A guy I know who has been and will be again world longboard champion can pull off all the hp moves as well as throw in the traditional ones on the one board and that board is very high performance shaped by Billy Tholhurst. So go see ur shaper and continue to practice all moves and u will get there, good luck.

Very true. Do note however it is Tassie. Surfing Tas only has a junior and opens division. There are none other for long boarders. Surfing Tas are also the only guys who run comps here aside from the odd local club one which are more just fun days and an excuse for a piss up at night.

But, as you say, throwing all maneuvers, both traditional and modern, on the one board would be great! I will have a chat to him and see.

Cheers for the feedback,
Tom.

Tom.

Tom if you were an everyday punter having a surf and loving this great sport i would say nothing.
But because your having a go at competitive surfing and asking for advice,i feel i can say something that can be helpful.
you see in the golf world people walking up and giving advice is the norm and its a goodthing

your a great little surfer with great vision of where to put yourself on the wave also great moves.
if i was going to say something only to help, it would be your arms Tom.
they are just not as powerful as your bottom half if you got your arms in the right positions this would make
your turns even more powerful and they would look in sync and add even more style
Tom do it get yourself a coach and kick arse.

I have heard this countless times from everyone! That has been my focus the last few surfs, really trying to drop the back arm and turn head more with turns. I will continue to work on this through summer and go to the camps next year.

Lol, teacup.

I took a look at this and thought about it. Majority of the time I am in this part of the wave when going for a nose ride, I have found that if I am not, I will nose dive straight away. A problem with my current mal is that it has a bit of rocker right through the bottom, particular in the nose which is where I don't want it.

Would love a log to ride on those small days. Missed out on a great deal for a performance mal the other day, it was 400 and made by one of my local shapers, gutted!

Tom one thing I noticed in the first clip was when he was heading up front he was riding on the top of the wave,I think you should hunt around leaned a thruster set up with a flatter rocker which will help you up front, that yellow board you were riding had too much nose lift imho, sure a log would have you up front hanging 10 but hanging ten only will not win you the Tas title which I can see you achieving one day.I think guy's like you should be encouraged by local shapers, its a shame to see someone with your talent being held back because of equipment.

Very true about the yellow one. Quite a bit of nose rocker in both boards. A good performance shape for comps that does everything it can would be great!

Still want a log for fun though.

As for local shapers, there is only one guy that shapes longboards. He rips though, I may have to ask him about buying boards or getting sponsorship. He shapes for another company ( they just use his templates ) but I am not sure who they are, will have to ask him about it. Just not many people. Like literally, 3000-4000 in this region with probably no more than 75 surfers.

I would suggest taking a read even if you aren't after hanging all ten. Great tips on nose riding and board design.

Perfect response to my original answer.

Bit of a late inclusion to the discussion, but mac is spot on. Too much rocker and you are pushing water. A modern nose rider style board will give you the best of all types of wave. I'm only a weekend warrior, but a little clue I picked up in an article made all the difference in getting 10 over. Basically shape your body a bit like a question mark. Have your backside behind your heels and try to put your weight back onto your heels. Don't lean forward.
Might help. Borrow a couple of specific nose riders and see the difference. Good luck m8.

As you mention, too much rocker is pushing water. I noticed this today while surfing on my single fin. I did get ten over at one stage though but I didn't wax the board up before heading out and slipped as I was cross stepping back off the nose haha I was so stoked to finally have ten over! But It was only once and still need more practice!

Another longboarder paddled out as well (to my surprise, it was only about half a foot on the sets and really full.) and he shapes boards for another company. Anyway, he lent me his for a go, I think he is pretty interested in seeing me do well with longboarding because the other local kids don't really do it (they just rip on shorties, currently at nationals now ). Anyway this mal he lent me was one he shaped not long ago, very flat nose rocker, a little tail lift and a standard shorty thruster set up. The nose was quite wide and the tail was 15 inch. He said he weighs about 85-90 so it was quite thick in the nose, probably too thick for me as I only weigh 65kg.

Anyway, the board was great! A whole lot lighter, looser and faster than my single fin. I could feel the difference straight away with the flatter nose rocker, so much faster when I was standing about a foot from the nose. If it had a mal fin box in it with a big fin, I reckon this one could have been the ultimate nose rider!

I will probably get him to shape me one it was that good, I have never ridden something with a rocker profile that flat and it was soooo much better.

Thanks for the tips too! All the really good longboarders seem to nose ride with the '?' shape body. I will attempt to emulate this!

Cheers,
Tom.
