He did and then left and went back with McT.
I had a few video's back in the mid 90's and he was in some of them. He really stood out from the others on those big boards and his style. The way he rode that red old mal of his was as good as his surfing on modern boards. Really good to watch.

Its the kind of move you put on when you discuss with your missus about how you need a new board or a one week road trip with your mates.

Grabbing the rail helped me because it gets you down in a cool drop knee position and forces you to hold that position the whole turn (see my photo)
I also practised on the beach (like a yoga move) before I paddle out.
PS drop knee turns are a dying art!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also helps to be down low for that final toe side turn, and do the leg extension for speed generation after you've just dropped a fair bit of speed!

No SUP talk in here either Jonesy. Not sure where that leaves your user name!

just looking at those photos likes the key is not to drop your inside shoulder.

even thou the inside hand is trailing the water, the shoulders remain square with the body.

and that is one of the best kept secrets to any good surfing

Hey Jonesy, great style mate, I find when I get into the stance I feel like my rear foot is on a really loose skateboard. Did you find that out at first until you got the balance right? Also single fin or thruster any difference on positioning?

The turn I reckon looks really cool on a longboard is one I have no name for and is real hard to explain, but I'll try.

You're a natural and you're going right or a bit straight, you start cross stepping backwards for your turn, but instead of planting your right foot on the tail for the turn, you stop short and bring your left foot back to the tail to do the turn.

Never seen it done on a big wave but I've often seen it in vids in little peelers.

And often it looks like it's done as more of a correction rather than a committed turn.

Anyone else see this?

yeh, they cross step back towards the tail then go into switch stance to do a cuttie. or instead of the plain cross step, i like when they walk back to the tail with their head in that direction and then do the cuttie in switch. they plan to do this,it is not a mistake

I'm a longboader but I hate surfing single fin mals! Thruster all the way
Spot on about the stance and feel, a kick pad on the back tail help's to plant your foot!!!
Regarding the x-step turn....LOVE it, in small waves only!!!!

I might be able to shed some light on this classic longboard manouvre...strange as it seems you can teach yourself by practicing on land...I know I did...first you have to mark out a planshape and stand where you think you would be in a normal turn...to get the board to really swing around you have to hit the sweet spot bang on with the ball of your foot...its usually a fair way back so dont be afraid to put your foot way back, to the point that sometimes you may even touch the deck with your knee....the next most important thing is the placement of your head and shoulders...you will notice that allmost all shots you see the shoulders are pretty square to the board and arms are wide...this not only looks stylish its very important to the follow through of the turn...oh and look where you are going..you will follow your sight...the great thing about this turn is that your weight is distributed onto the sweet spot in one motion whithout having to take a step...and when its time to take the pressure of all you have to do is bring your back foot forward and your back in trim...hope this helps because it feels fantastic and its very functional.
