Board in my profile pic is a Sanctum, it was my goto board a couple of years ago. I still bring it along as backup...if you order one, grab the 10 pack box of wax for your water temp too, its good stuff & works out great value when you don't havta pay any extra shipping
This one was an interesting but disappointing adventure.
The shape and deep concaves appealed to me but it is an antiquated design and like driving and old Cadillac over a new Camaro really. Fun for a while but advancements and modern technology make today's toys that much more enjoyable.
The board was true to the Pipeliner shape that it's copied from but I dare say the shape was replaced quickly in '68 as the board felt difficult to ride, to narrow for its length and thickness and to ride, very much like walking a tightrope.
I was disappointed in the build quality of my board (poor finish and blank / stringer) and I moved it on very quickly.
...but good on Sanctum for putting retro shapes out there !
Whether the foam is any different I'd not like to comment.
I had a 6'4 Sanctum keel fish and it felt strong and durable and the deck held up great. I've snapped a 9'4 ECS clean in half but it was wrong place wrong time and perhaps not the board.
ECS products look great and don't have the blemishes that this Sanctum Pipeliner had.
I have a couple of ECS Bulldog's & a Sanctum Scrapdog...The second Bulldog I picked up in Bali had a couple of minor glassing imperfections. The Sanctum has had a hard knock that only got a pressure when it could easily have broken glass. A friend has had 2 LB ECS boards delaminate after 6 months, but Ryan was cool enough to replace them...I think both company's are about on par. They have pretty different shapes in their line'up & are worth a go if you see something that looks good. I'd just go for the board off the company that appears to have the shape you are chasing. I can say ECS are good at rectifying issues, don't know about Sanctum.
Regular retail prices for the boards have gone up a lot in the last 12 months. I'd consider another one at a sale price, but otherwise I would rather pay an extra $100-$150 for a board off a local shaper or something with superior structure Sunover/HS/FW. In the past couple of years they've had sales around this time of year on Ebay & on 2nd's Ebay seller accounts that sell boards that are meant to be structurally sound, but have blemishes or scratches.
For 800 bucks I don't think you could go far wrong... does look a bit on the anorexic side...generally on a big board like that you are looking at 21 plus and at least 4 inches thick.....looks nice though

How big is the board going to be and how big are the waves that you plan to ride it in going to be...old school gun...mini gun...proper gun....****ed if I would want to riding a D fin in big surf....but I am a massive nancy

i wanna do like the original Rhino chasers or Elephant guns.... old school gun...i love big heavy boards and i love D fins... i will ride it when its big i know its over kill but i love the challenge of riding big boards....i just want something special shaped by bob..
im thinking 1 x 1inch Cedar stringer with 2x 1/2 inch balsa stringers...8ounce volan top and bottom probably 2 layers....glass in Volan D fin ...yew

Agree - I would be wary of big D fin as you want to turn it! Go for a fin box and play around with fins.
I used to have an 10 inch hatchet fin in my 10ft log and it was terrible in any wave over waist high. Since I put an 11inch rake in I've ridden it in double overhead and found I can actually turn it, particularly helpful on bottom turns!
My 2cents on the sanctum gun is a bit to skinny and thin for my liking.
Interesting taking note of Bob McT thoughts on rocker for the G2 gun - less rocker will allow better paddle power / glide to allow you to get in early.

I'm going to have to get a bit Roy here...but the G2's and most of the really good guns that are made for Australian waves (not slabs) employ a long low entry rocker which will mean that the apex of the rocker is further back....this helps with paddle speed and will prevent pearling as the pivot/fulcrum points come into play as soon as you standup and you weight goes back a bit...either way I think Big Spazz will deffo end up with a pearler and Simmondo will deffo be off Bob's Christmas card list if he buys a non-Bob brand
Having owned and ridden a lot of this style of board, it's hard to go past the G2 however some might find it a touch refined so I'd suggest the MC Mal Gun is THE longboarder's gun.
