Back to the serious business of booze and how rorted we get in this country, here's a link to the excise rates our exalted parliament charge.
http://law.ato.gov.au/atolaw/view.htm?Docid=PAC/BL030002/1&PiT=99991231235958So let's breakdown the monies in a 700ml bottle of Smirnoff currently on special for $30.00
Excise rate $76.37/lt of alc.
$76.37 x 0.7 x 0.375 =$20.05
GST $30/1.1 = $2.73
So that's $22.78 out of $30 that goes straight into the government coffers and if it's an imported spirit then you can add 5% import duty to that too unless we have a free trade agreement with the exporters country.
Doesn't leave much for the distributor and retailer does it? And I can tell you now that the retailer would be making less than $2 on that sale.
Also goes a long way to explaining why a 700 of voddy sets you back about $12.00 in the States too.
And if you can't be arsed doing the sums the excise on a carton of full strength is about $15.
