I have often wondered if we pay for the name brand eg if you get 4 high profile board shapers in the same room and ask them to shape you a board all given the exact dimemsions of you're requirement would the boards come out pretty close in shape or not?And would you be able to pick which named board logo goes onto what board?

Good question asea, I have always believed if you want quality you got to pay for it.
Some companies that have branded well over the years will always attract a slightly higher retail price, not saying they are the best.
I also look at the factory and who's employed, many years of experience would attract a higher hourly rate for the workforce.Mctavish have hundreds of years collectively.

Other quality manufactures I respect are South Coast,Laguna Bay and the Astro you and vander have are quality boards. There are many but those few are ones that come to my small pee brain atm.

Probably not, unless you were looking for an exact shape, I wouldn't have a clue Well, I'm learning. There are so many boards/shapers out there I rely on mates and their feedback.
Hence, I bought a McT. (thanks guys)

You could paint all my boards solid white, and I could still tell you who shaped them, and who glasses them.

The McTavish boards have a little bit more going on than most. Most of his range have the hip pivot points, and the chined rails up the front. These features are easy to spot.

In a way, McTavish used to look expensive, but they have sort of frozen their prices, and the others have caught up.

Remember that "white six ones" are basically circa $700. And "nine ones" have literally twice as much glassing material. 50% more length, but heaps more rail lap work, heaps more resin, more sanding, more polishing, dearer blanks, etc.

I think basic malibu's are circa $1,000. McT even have a little selection of High Performers for $995 at the moment. 100% made in Australia keeps the price up a fraction too. But you are getting higher quality / better quality control.

Before I went and ordered my McT I was really close to getting a Takayama which came in at around $200 dearer. I've always liked the Taks for their flatter rockers and shapes. Both of these brands have pretty distinct features that you can spot from a mile away.
I've always believed you get what you pay for. I've been getting longboards off Mark Rabbidge for a while now and he does them from home which brings the price down a bit and they are great boards.
In the case of McTavish boards I reckon Simondo is right in saying that other brands have caught up price wise.

smh, many years ago I had a 10 foot fireball with Noosa in mind I found it just too big and gave them a wide berth until vanders kindly lent me his and the very first wave, two paddle strokes onto my feet and it just went,as I past vanders on that wave I said something like, love this board.

So that's why I have gone up in length and volume, thanks vanders.

Wave hogs at Snapper I reckon 10 footers are a whole different deal to 9's and 9'6's heaps nicer glide, earlier in and cruisy feel. You only just need to stand there and enjoy it ........ I'm hangin to get back out there

Yes What

Yes you pay extra for a name. Yes you sometimes pay extra for royalties for the namesake.
Yes there are 10c pieces of siht coming outta china with a name on it and suddenly its a standard aussie retail priced 10c piece of siht.
So in my opinion name guarantees nothing other than the price tag.
Again - in my opinion, the best shortboards in Aus' are far from the most expensive and the best longboards even more so.

I agree, my Al Byrne was very cheap for a new custom $650 + freight. For a top quality board with channels that is boolshiz cheap.
I couldnt comment on LBs but I recon shorties are pretty cheap depending on brand and construction

Sometimes its just luck of the draw as well. I happened to walk into a shop yest and find an Al Merrick POD on the shelf for $500 brand new. Could not believe my eyes so brought it in a flash. Stoked. It was pretty much exactly what I wanted and a fair bit cheaper than the custom shorty I got 2 months earlier from a less well known name. Infact I would doubt most people would have heard of the guy who normally makes my boards. But he makes them well and has always treated me well so he always gets my orders. As a general rule I think that boards are still fairly well priced given that 15 years ago I was paying $500 for a board. Maybe its just the smarter ones who have established themselves a good brand name and following and have put their rates up over the years. McCoy for example long ago decided against the mass market approach and raised his prices. I used to freak at the prices of McTav long boards a few years back but after renting one whilst in Nossa last month and loving it I would not hesitate to pay the premium for one of his sticks - it was one of the nicest boards I have ever ridden. Respect - actually its fair to say that I will probably buy one of his sticks when I work out what I need.
