The guy or girl riding it , remember those early vids of Dave Kalama making the 11'6 southpoint look good.Good surfers make the boards not the other way round.
Cant really answer your question mate caus ive never been on a sub 9 board , not likely too either. Did like the look of the magic carpet sub 9 i seen the other day though.

from the little I have ridden the 8.6 MC I was impressed...very stable, as it should be at about 30 wide....but its light too, had to keep reminding myself its a popout. I ride a LSD8.8, this im enjoying very much.

yeah, i've had my eye on that one. did you find 30" wide ok to surf? i'm not a fan of wide ish boards, but the plane shape looks ok. the lsd i would like to hear about too- is the weight down a bit for the earlier models

the truth is i'm not going to be surfing sups as much, so i'm looking for the feel good fun factor, not a hideous balance/leg work out that is part of pushing the boundries. i can't see myself using a board over nine ft as a surfing sup, hence the post

it was only 1-2 foot and no power surf when I had a crack. it was easy to paddle and on the 1 or 2 ok waves felt like it would be good in 3 or more.

the LSD I have is one of their early models. Its a bit on the heavier side, but the shape is good. much different to the CG as it has more rocker....so, slower but a bit more forgiving near the pocket for an average surfer (me)

Not sub 9 foot (being 9 foot), but I'm really enjoying the 9ft Naish Hokua. Stability is good and the surf performance is excellent - it seems to allow me to make turns a later and on steeper sections (compared to the 9'6" Hokua).

Only thing I would say is that i've not tried any boards other than Naish and *Board so can't compare to likes of the LSD boards.

That 8'6 DMS is one of the best boards I have ever ridden period. I do not mean just a SUP either. It felt better than most shortboards I have ridden as well.

I agree with Teatree though. A good surfer can ride pretty much anything.

i don't see the pros ride ordinary boards even though they can -better than anybody else

Guys I hear all this talk about sub 9'0 boards etc and one day I would like to think I could get there. However I am new to SUP and honestly what size person would be able to paddle these boards through a break and into waves? Are sub 9 footers just the realm of the lightweight 70-80kg guys? and or does it come down to experience?

Teatree: camera boat will be there don't worry about that.

Dazza: I'm 6ft 92kg my smallest board was a DC 8-7 , experience does help balance wise on the smaller boards , just keep at it and go even if it's windy

I have ridden 8'4 Naish, 8'5 Naish 8'10 Naish 9' Jimmy Lewis, 8'9 Psh ripper 8'6Psh Wide Ripper, 9' Fanatic 9' Naish.
I am 80kg and 6' have benn surfing 32 years and riding SUP for about 2 1/2!!
In the way they surf I would say
No 1 8'10 naish but hard to balance on if its 10 knots or more and messy! But shreads My pick if it was clean and glassy all the time.
No 2 8'9 PSH Ripper Can ride this board onshore messy, big, small, great board!!
No 3 8'5 Naish really great allounder a little harder to stand on than the 8'9 ripper if its messy
I Bought 8'6 Lugana Bay!!!!( over 6' plus there is to much lift in tail and gets a bit sketchy but how often do we get that)
Best board I have ridden!!!!!
IMO!!!!!!

What does MC stand for, I am lazy and like wide boards so an 8'6" by 30" sounds like my sort of board.
