Usually caused by bending the lower arm and pulling the paddle using the bicep. Typical newbie paddle stroke.

Keep the lower arm straight.

That will force you into a more technically correct stroke.

Yea, book me in im all over that for sure and the codine box

you are going to need time to get used to it - its called being sup fit. after my first sup surf, i could hardy move next day. listen to your body, you are at a stage where you can injure yourself if you are not careful.
cheers
ps grab that paddle session, save yourself a lot of trouble

I had my first sup surf yesterday. I went out for about two hours in the morning and for the rest of the day I was just wrecked.
I have been flatwater paddling for a month or so now and thought I was going good.
HA!
How wrong was I!!!!!
SUPing in the surf is a total body workout.( it was 10 Knots cross shore)
So so much harder than flat water.

Very stoked though. even made the coastalwatch cam 10am replay

alarm bells......multiple sholder surgeries.....maybe start with the movements with out the clubs....not only are they a weight but a pendulum that applys leverage....

True- but my last surgery was almost a year ago- the muscles are working again but they need some light weights work- so 1 pound clubs seem like the go- although of course starting with just the movements is also a good idea.

I dont think the shoulders are causing your or my or anyones problems, The main reason after surgery you have pain even a yr latter is training the muscles to work again, But also trying to teach the head of the humerious to sit back

If it tends to sit foward you will have pain in what ever you do, Not making it worse but just causing pain.

I have had plenty work done, And i train the muscles to work but still have problems now and then, Once you have shoulder surgery its a lifetime of ongoing rehab to train them up again

But this may seem a extreme thing to say, Ok But if you have had a frozen shoulder or the need to have a decompression you know the pain is much worse than having to train shoulder up for months and yrs after.

Living with pain is not nice, This threed could be made into a avise thing if you have a idea on rehab for different things.

I.E the clubs for shoulders, I get real pissed when physios have a little rub and say see you next time thats $20 thanks wast of time

Get yourself some clubs & get training then - best thing I've ever done for my shoulder probs.

Judging by BP's habits on seabreeze & his list of ankle/shoulder injuries/surgeries - i would advise him to try and exercise moderation in ALL activities

Trust me - sup can be brutal on your body if you do it wrong or do too much when just starting out. If you don't do it in moderation you will injure yourself so badly that all you will want to do is crawl into a hole and die. Its kinda cliche but as Gerry Lopez says "surf today so you can surf tommorrow - not like there is no tommorrow".

Yeah- 'training the muscles up' has been a fruitless four year endeavour- to make the shoulder sit down and back- every time I put effort into that I end up with knots in my back so bad I can't use the muscles anymore- and that's using light weights. It's a fine line of no pain between use and no use, just got to learn to walk it more gracefully i guess.

Cheers for listening BP

I found last time i went out, I kept my arms straight i.e through the stroke as well i did not get so much shoulder pain.

Im afraid that once you dig into the areas with a scapel it is a long time in recovery, To a doctor or physio this means more movment But to those who suffer the pain it is a lot deaper than that.

Yes surgery will fix PART of it but ongoing pain is a lottery

I can only suggest to anyone looking at surgery esp on shoulders, Is to be verry carefull and think twice as the pain you have now may well be worth trying to put up with.

This is for anything, Be it shoulders kness ...

I am in hope that SUP will provide me with the goods to build up the areas i need as im sure you do.

I have pain in the worst areas, But its a management thing but this does not make it any better or the pain to go away. It just means i may stop it from wanting me to kill anyone.

I did find as mentioned the book on trigger points this is very good and i tried one or two of them and it works.

I mentioned to my physio this and they looked at me sideways and said bull ****

Now if it was bull **** how come it worked? I will not return to a negative physio or GP
People with permanent pain or long term pain will only know and understand
Im not a religious man, But i prey that anyone who think im talking **** that they dont get such a problem, As you will wish to trade your balls to get the pain gone

Weights are fine, Just dont do the one by lifting from your side straight up in front of you, this will pull the head out and pinch real bad.

The reason you get tight in the back and also im sure in each side of the kneck like a nerve pinch is all to do with the same area of the shpulders, from yrs of slouching the shoulders foward, this is why i think SUP is a great form of rehab for all injuries.
