Some nice little waves at Days st this weekend, about 1.5 to 2 foot (bigger set every now and again) spoilt only by a 60+ year old mal rider who told me to puck off, as the waves I were riding were for 'Mal riders only', I politely asked him if he was serious, to which he replied that 'goat boaters and big floatie boards werent welcome' and that I should 'move down the beach'.

Now, I had been surfing with the pack, about 8 surfers, for about half an hour, picked off some of the bigger sets, then realised I had taken a few rides that might have been considered picking off from out the back, so I backed off a few to let some of the bigger set waves through,

But to have this old bloke have a crack at me for surfing a board that was probably only 1 foot shorter than his was a bit rich. He was surfing with two other Mal riders, picking off all the bigger sets / waves in front of the short boarders, hardly sharing the stoke,

So I moved down the beach, tried not to let it ruin my session and to be honest, had one of the best surfs ever, caught the lefts from out the back, all on my own 50 metres down towards middleton point, then caught the reform rights on the inside,

Thanks you stupid old gunt, you made my day :)

so funny the amount of people who have a problem with something different! the old fella was probably dirty that you could pick the waves up before him but all the shortboarders were probably lovin it!

I really was very concious of what I was catching and sharing the love, but I guess it wasnt enough for the old fart,

What is also hilarious is that he is a local grumpy that had a crack at one of the local windsurfers, who in the afternoon, whilst riding his kona, was abused by the same bloke for the same reason, 'get off my waves, these waves are for surfers',

I really cant wait to meet him again, gonna paddle right up to him next time, try and start the relationship over.....

Makes me laugh when people think that they own the ocean and have all rights reserved for any wave.

Wouldn't you be p-ssed if a guy paddle out and takes all the set waves as divaldo stated in his post, the 60 year old has probably surfed the same spot for years and this sup'er paddles out and shows no respect, good on the old guy I say!

I did realise that I had taken more than my share, hence why I backed off, let more than a few waves through,

i was just pissed off at his attitude and the fact that his board was only slightly shorter than mine!

makaka,
You have the disadvantage of not knowing the spot. Its like a metro beach break with the fattest waves in the world.

Assuming Divaldo was doing the right thing and not being a hog, the bloke is obviously a tool.

I would have taken off next to him on the next half a dozen waves just to make a prick of myself, but thats just me......

Treat others as they treat you. I start by default to everybody is a angel and go from there.

The good thing about divaldo's post is ,he admits taking too many waves at the beginning of his session

Sorry,
I read it as picked of a few of the bigger sets, not picked off too many. If he hogged it, I stand corrected.

I dont think I hogged it, By too many waves, I mean like 2 or 3, then realized I might be pissing people off, then the old guy fires up,

I think I was more pissed off at being called a goat boater!

Rasta of Barwon Heads (Vic) was using the term "Gay Gondolier" in his Swell Net Postings. I thought it was funny !

Not sure, but I suspect he was sacked from that loveless task. I enjoyed reading his daily rants though... the first quarter was about the surf, then the rest of the post was whatever was bothering him !!

FLAME SIUT ON!Mals, SUPs, ect have so much more paddling power than any shortboard, you guys should know that.

As I have said in other posts and threads I wont go out where SUPs are, and its getting to the point that mals not only take every wave but also paddle past you back out to the line up.

Like you say "gotta laugh"

Sounds like this satdy morning we need to get a SUP posse together and lynch this mal riding mob!

SUP's at dawn - Day street

Mal riders make great speed humps - short boarders seem to sink to easy

The question is 1-2foot Day street - why would you bother on your short board - its like riding waves in a slow motion movie -

In one of the longboard magazines, the guy who does the WA news section referred to SUPs as "Goat Boats for Hemorrhoid Sufferers".

Quite funny, until I saw the guy in the line up recently and thought chances are his tired old ass is more likely to have hemorroids than mine.

I got told yest by one of the older grumpy 'guardians' of my local beach that I am now tolerated on my SUP as long as they still see me on my shortboard from time to time.

The comment was 'at least you're making the effort to turn that bloody thing and except for the paddle you don't look that different anymore, it's those jonny cum latelies that piss everyone off'

I had a chuckle to myself and went on with my day.

My point is that with time people are becoming more accepting of people on SUP and looking back at the rider, his/her ability and manners rather than the board they ride. You can isolate people based on equipment but in the end it's the pilot not the plane.

One by one more and more of the grumpy guys stop by to borrow a board to 'take the kids paddling in the creek'... These are the same guys giving it to me big time not that long ago. "aaah those things are for kooks, you wouldnt catch me dead on one"... I just say now 'hey make sure you don't try it then eh, just the kids'.

I've been riding short boards for 30 years - Joe average have good and bad days - from NW O' WA to the Sunshine coast - and I must say it doesn't matter where I've surfed - there are the friendlies - the wave hogs, the aggro locals and the silent types that shred the place and blend back into the line up - riding all kinds o gear - I am surprised no ones dragged bloody Knee boarders into this the droppin in mongrels. We even used to have the Southport grommet beater - think he is a surf coach on the Gold Coast now!

I have been on the end of Mal riders comments at there favourite fat sh!t wave hang out - fat half pissed drongo's sitting at the top of the cliff paying you out for ridng a billiard table - and have since realised they don't like being called fat half pissed mal riding kooks - they get a little annoyed and have very serious "I am gonna kick your arse " looks about them.

I still believe its a case of treat people how you would like to be treated and if that doesn't work laugh at them paddle outthe back and take another set wave.

I have had a go on one and that was enough for me, in saying that I saw a vid that dog man did and I was impressed how he moved it around in the slop.
There are not many people in Perth that can ride them with any sort of skill that I have seen. The only reason that I look here is that I like looking at pictures of the gear/boards some of the designs are very good.
