Okay if it was a dolphin or pilot whale why didn't the guys in the helicopter that provided vision only 15 sec later see it. After all dolphins hang around the surface, whatever it was, was not seen by the chopper so it must of gone deep.
Sharks don't need to breathe....

I was in the water working with Trevor Hendy on Sunday and it was freakin dark. I just saw the Hi-Res version, it has a round nose but it is moving real fast..... Just hope everyone keeps on saying Pilot Whale, I am sticking to that.. All the Ironmen and Women were freaking on Twitter... Here is another angle.

I don't think anyone on here believes its a shark. So why the heading of "Huge shark jumps out of the water during iron man event"? Honestly i would now say small Pilot whale but what ever tool said it was a shark is just stiring up crap with a big wooden spoon that should be instead used to beat the auther with[}:)]

Good news is that Yesterday the Japanese hearded about 40 or so of these into Taiji and slaughtered them so thats 40 or so less to worry about

Really disappointing media reports..

Not surprising from the media though, just have to mention the word shark and they run breaking news or front page stories complete with file footage of a 5m great white taken 5 years ago. Creating hysteria makes news and sells papers.

FWIW I reckon its a pilot whale or dolphin, couldnt see a trailing tail fin although was pretty quick so hard to see.

Yes I think you're right. If you look really carefully you will see that there are 2 of them. The other one comes from just behind the white bouy and passes just behind the paddler out the back. It doesn't break the surface of the water but is just under the surface. It comes past before the other one...

I'd expect nothing more of the media To be fair but what upsets me is surf folk. People like you and me who love the ocean for what it is, for the joy we get out of her. For a surfer to experience that joy and then try and dictate what should be there and shouldn't be there really gets up my ars-e
