My two bob's worth...

The present exit chute as selected by the organisers is the optimal area to exit the ocean.
Two factors reinforce this fact:
1. The flags are located there
2. Surfers want to be in that section

A temporary closure of that section is the obvious solution.

A water finish will not address the safety issue.
In fact, I'd suggest that risk of accidents would increase.
Participants still need to exit the water; and doing so over a wider section of surf without 'eyes on the water' would be a step backwards.

Although it remains problematic, I'd suggest the event organisers make more of an effort to communicate what is happening to beach goers.
Better signage and regular announcements using a clear PA system (multiple loud hailers) over the period of the finish would be a good start.

Some of the beach goers are oblivious to the fact an event is being run and if aware, would do "the right thing".

Notwithstanding the above, this thread attests to the fact that others are well aware of the event and choose to ignore it; loitering directly in the path of incoming participants.
Not much can be done about this group.
However, I'd wager they'd be the first to squeal should something karmic come their way?
Imo, the hypocrisy required to be aware of the event, ignore it, then complain about the participants being a nuisance is breathtaking.

Participants in these events comply with all safety requirements, attend pre-race briefings and pay an entrance fee.
They deserve the respect of others for the short time required to safely execute these events.

The closure of a small (50m) section of beach for 1-2 hours a few times over summer will go along way to respecting the rights of all stakeholders to the safe use of a central beach in a major metropolitan area.

Thanks for listening.
DJ

I've been following this thread with interest. This has to be one of the best thread closers in recent SB history. Great work Buccy!

Ha ha, yeah he did. And right where you were about to snap off the lip too.

And I agree with you - who is this buccaneer guy? And Phatboy? And Greenroom? And shunter? And stimo? And so on. They should all post only under their full names and addresses.

buccaneer, I reckon you'd lose that wager. I reckon the first to squeal would be one of those six year old kids.

Participants comply with all safety requirements except being able to control their aircraft carriers as they come into port.

Yet again this forum doesn't fall to disappoint. Only backslapping allowed. Sup can't possibly do anything wrong. Attack! Attack!

It constantly amuses me that I couldn't ever post anything valid because I don't sup. The event must have been impeccably run at no danger to the public. Next time the beach should be closed so they can have full run of a private beach. The public can leave. Tourists on holiday, come back tomorrow.

I wonder what would happen if I made up a new sup alias and built a profile supporting it and then dared to make a comment contrary to the groupthink. Shock! Confusion!

I never get hard feelings from this forum. It's everyone else who gets butthurt at me and calls for my banning. Just trying to present what I thought was a valid viewpoint.

I'm all good for mates in the water, but I'll give you a call when my drain's blocked. I'm local and every plumber I've ever had over to do jobs has sucked.

Three simple points.

1. Buccy's suggestion to close a 50m section of a 300 metre beach would hardly be asking to have "full run of a private beach"...suggesting the public need to leave and tourists go home is rather childish. I believe this was a fair and just suggestion. This is no different to when a surfing/longboarding/SUP event is being held at a surf break and the non-competing public are asked to stay outside the markers.

2. If a parent allows their 6 year old child to be swimming unaccompanied in front of a clearly marked finish for a surf craft event then they need only point the fingers at themselves....

3. Hijacking an internet thread that has no affiliation with the regulatory body that organises the event to condemn and complain about valid safety concerns is pointless. Raising it on this thread in my opinion is belligerent, my apologies if you have raised it elsewhere also. If the concerns were genuine, give the organisers a call.

No need to make an alias, just come for a SUP and comment away

Joined this forum when it was just a windsurf and kite forum over 10 years ago.
At the time I had a green HG wagon which I put GREENROOM license plates on it. That's why I chose Greenroom as a user name.
It's stuck and my nickname is Greeny. It's got nothing to do with my first or last name.
But I've put my full name and suburb in my profile just for your viwing pleasure

Stimo,I think your supposed to start those posts with "with all due respect" but well said that's pretty accurate. For Legoins information I too heard some accents in the water the main one being stupidity. To suggest that someone's accent has some mistical link to performance in terrible surf kind of rules out the need for the WCT.! I raised my concerns with one cometitor in the race who is a good surfer from Queensland & said "by the time we finish there will be 20 surfers in the water". He looked at me like an idiot & said" is that good surf. Know ones going to surf that " The reality is that once you round that boy you had 20 people all trying to snake each each other and paddling right in front of you. Many paddlers had the option of running through the pack or falling off. Would moving the finish north stop people going in the water if the best bank of the summer developed in this location? If not it's not solved the problem. Legion needs to realised that the problem was as much a symptom of the lack of surf in Perth as the even organisers. Where' other than Perth in the world would people surf that ? Let alone with 50 skis about to finish on the beach. I would hate someone to get hurt but if your paddling across the front of a 14ft ski your kind of asking for it regardless of what language you speak or where your from. From Legions last comments I can only assume he thinks thinks he's a bit of a Legend!!!Perhaps that name was taken or he spelt it wrong?

Ah ok looked closer than that in the pic, must be a trick of the lens eh? in any case after reading legions posts I reckon you guys were a bit harsh on him, that board could have hit someone. Legion was only trying to help suppers out to avoid that happening, which would help ensure the event can finish there for years to come.

Stimo has a very attractive Eastern European accent. It opens a lot of doors - even some with no hinges.
